    :mad:Dear Fellow WindowsBBS members,

I have Windows Vista (SP1) Home Premium with all latest updates.

I have also Windows Media Player 11 [Version 11.0.6001.7000]

Being a massive music connoisseur, i have encountered a dreaded 'Unknown file' which has placed itself as a 'music file' but has no metadata or actual 'physical data' associated with it.

I have done 'System Restore' a good few times, which had also caused me some problems. Then realising that if you have Norton 2007, it's best to do a System Restore in 'Safe Mode' which i had done.

    ...still no joy!!!

I had manually deleted my entire 'Library Catalogue' of music, to which this **** annoying 'unknown file' is still sitting under the letter 'O' for Other.

    ...still no joy!!!

I had also used 'CCleaner' to eradicate any 'obsolete data' that might be associated with that pesky file.

As also 'Disk Cleanup' ...trying to be smart ...still nothing !!!

    (starting to get  )

    Then ...

Typed the following commands and press Enter after each line. (With Administrative rights)

    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 wmp.dll
    exit

I have attempted a registry fix solution that was provided on the Microsoft website:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541

 (guess what!! still no luck!!!)

I had done a 'Full Scan' on Norton 2007 (With latest Virus Definitions)

(To which my guess it would come as clean) but will confirm this on next update.

I download music using Ares 2.0.8 or BitTorrent. I always scan the files for any malware or spyware which always seemlessly comes back as 100% clean. I used either AVG Anti-Spyware [Ver. 7.5.1.43 Freeware Version] & Norton 2007

I had re-downloaded Update for Windows Vista (KB941651)

but i know this was packed in with Service Pack 1, so i don't know if this would make a difference, if i am to re-apply it?

I am starting to run out of guesses on what to do next????

So any ideas 'O' Great Experts out there :p

How do you see that file? Through Windows Explorer? Does it have a name?

    Unknown File WMP11 (Update)

Okay, i can confirm now 100% conclusive that Norton 2007 didn't find anything in terms of Spyware or Malware.

When using 'Explorer' i checked the following paths:

C:\Users\x.x\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Media Player (x = variable representing host name of folder)

As also the folders corresponding to Windows Media in 'Program Files' ...

    Windows Media Player

    Windows Media Components

I can't seem to locate anything suspicious ....

That's with 'show all files and folders option enabled' under folder options.

which has now drawn me to a huge blank on where or what to do next???

    :(

Sorry to be a little more specific to your question ...no it doesn't have a name, folder or anything !!!

Which does not mean that you are free of anything. Just that Norton isn't finding any.

    Fully Resolved

    Hi ...

Right to clarify myself ...when i launched WMP11 there was a file on my library that was like a 'phantom' you can see it, but not do anything with it. After trawling around like a  man on the net, i found the solution. I wasn't able to delete the Current_360.wmdb as i had to turn off 'manually' in WMP11 the 'Share My Media' option. From there i disable that option, deleted the aforesaid '.wmdb extension'. Done a 'registry cleanup' using 'CCleaner', as also 'Disk Cleanup'. Re-added Library again. It turn out to be the corrupted 'Current_360.wmdb'. Hence Norton not detecting it as anything malicious. Well it's fully resolved now ...but thanks for your input.

The only headache i've got to deal with is trying to make my PS3 communicate with WMP11 on Windows XP ...it's driving me bananas
