    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

    Might consider uninstalling the USB ports in Device Manager and reboot. Hopefully windows will redetect them correctly.

    Sounds like you have been removing USB devices by simply pulling them out and not using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Notification Area before disconnecting physically.

    As Steve posted remove all USB controllers and root hubs through Device Manager and reboot.

    @ Steve: Thanks!!!
    Well, I did try that, but it doesn't seem to be working out.

    @Pete: Not really Pete. I am always careful with my USB devices. Actually, I had a virus problem. Since then this stuff been happening. I re-installed my OS recently. Still the same problem persists.

    When you reinstalled the OS was it a clean install with format? - if that was the case did you install the chipset drivers? If you formatted the drive any remnants of the virus will be gone.

    Which of the USB ports are not recognised? Those on the mobo at the rear or the front ports on the case. If it is the front ports check the connection of these ports to the motherboard both for good connection and plugged in in the right order - refer to the manual here.

    silly question I guess, but did you re-install SP2 -3 or is your XP CD Slipstreamed with SP2 or 3.

    @Pete:
    Well, I formatted the disc and then installed the OS. Also, I did use the MoBo CD to install all the drivers.
    The USB ports I am referring to are the ones in the rear of the CPU (part of the MoBo). I have tried everything, but its weird. Nothing seems to be helping.:(
    Also, when I try to check what drivers have got installed for that device, it says "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device. ":confused:

    @Hawk:
    The CD contains Windows XP with SP2. Not yet upgraded to SP3.

    The rear ports are hardwired to the mobo unlike the front ports which are softwired.

    The USB ports are showing up as Unknown Device in Device Manager under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section? - or where?

    Did this problem 'suddenly' occur or is there some history to it?
