I'm having trouble with my computer slowing down drastically, and I suspect it's due to patch Q811493. This patch caused a slowdown when it was an individual patch, before SP2 was devised. I was able to remove it then because each patch was listed separately in the Add/Remove list.

Now SP2 is listed as one complete entity, and I don't know how to get at Q811493 to remove just it.

I don't like the thought of doing without SP2 altogether, because it does have some good stuff, but I've got to do something about this sluggishness.

    Help

    Hello Queuedecoton,

The problem for you is that SP2 incorporates pre-SP2 patches. So to get rid of Q811493, SP2, as you suspect, would have to be uninstalled.

IF you do uninstall SP2, MS does offer patches individually that were part of SP2, other than things like internal OS improvements such as DEP. The problem in the long run is that sooner or later SP2 will be mandatory - just as SP1 now is for getting updates.

The only remedy outside of that is to look at DEP which causes problems for some installations. Right click My Computer > properties > Advanced tab > Performance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention and there are a number settings. You can turn it off completely or for vital processes only. Play with settings.

Or start hunting for malware, or isolating startups one by one to see if any are causing your problem.

    Regards - Charles

Your suspicions about the root cause of your problem may not be true. The issue with Q811493 was supposedly fixed a couple of years ago, well before the SP2 upgrade incorporated it.

I'd look harder somewhere else. Check your Startups and check for spyware and virus.
