I recently downloaded IE7 and am having so many problems that I decided to uninstall it and reinstall IE6.

I went through the Add or Remove process from the Windows Control Panel and the uninstall completed ok.
The unistall included a registry cleanup.

When I try to install IE6 I get an error message telling me that a newer version of IE was detected and the install can't be performed.

How can I remove all traces of IE7 from my computer ... so I can then install IE6.

    thanks

You need do nothing more than remove IE 7 through Add/Remove programs to revert back to IE 6. I suspect your registry cleaning, which was not necessary, has removed something of importance.

I suggest you reinstall IE 7 and then uninstall it - hopefully you will then have reverted back to IE 6 unless vital registry entries are now missing.

    Hi pete,

The IE7 uninstall utility included an automatic registry cleanup ... looks like it was built into it by Microsoft.
I tried what you suggested ... reinstalling IE7 then uninstalling it but whatever the registry items that got removed that were needed for IE6 to work appear to be gone for good.

Looks like I'm stuck with IE7.

sir gerald: Several people have had the same problem. When I had it, the solution was to do a System Restore back to a time before the IE 7 download and install. That gets rid of IE 7 and puts IE 6 and everything else back to the way it was before. Is your "recently" recent enough you can do that without messing up other things?

If you continue to get the nagging update reminders, a possibility is to go to the update site (I'm not sure if it's the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site, it might make a difference) and when the IE 7 update appears as available, get it to be a hidden update offering. I think that will keep the reminders from bothering you.

It might be smart to wait a bit before acting on either of those suggestions. There are a lot of members here who are a lot sharper than I am, and you may want to see if they approve or disapprove of one or both of the ideas.

    BOBBO's advice is sound.

Windows Update and Microsoft Update are one and the same now and you can decline IE 7 if you wish. However the installation of IE 7 is to be recommended as it is inherently more secure.
