Hi, new member here so please be gentle.

my computer has been crashing repeatedly over the last few days and it seems to be from an update by microsoft.
this update is only affecting XP users with Service pack 2.
I gleaned this info from an online computer magazine and the only way at the moment seems to be to uninstall this update. MSO7-069.

but how do I find this and how do I uninstall it. I cannot log onto microsoft at all.

please can someone help, it's driving me mad!!!!!

p.s. Definitely not a techie so idiot-proof instructions please.

With the information you've provided, it's really complicated to find out what exactly is wrong with your pc.

If you can try to be more specific about the problem, I'm sure there are a lot of people here who can try to help you.

    For an example,

    1) How far can you get before you crash?

    2) How long has this been happening? (I use windows xp with sp2 also and I have not received this update.)

Irene - Welcome to the Board :)

Please be careful when quoting update/security bulletin nos - you should have put ms07-069, that's ms_zero_7, not ms_capital 0_7

ms07-069 - KB942615 can be uninstalled through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs - make sure to check 'Show Updates' at the top of the Add/Remove window.

MS have posted a further update .....
which can be downloaded from .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...367d-4d28-80ab-2a70139ae839&displaylang=en&tm

    Are you using IE 6?

Thanks so much for replying so soon to my problem.

    Pete C

I would not have known which exact file to delete anyway if you had not told me. Also I had not checked the show updates box, so no wonder I couldn't even find the updates, thick or what?

I would have tried the Microsoft fix but there was no way I could get onto any microsoft page to find out any info. even the link you gave me just kept showing as server unavailable until I uninstalled the dodgy update, it's just by lucky chance I found this forum.

The thing is now, I have uninstalled that security update, do I reinstall it followed by the patch/download from Microsoft ( I will have to save the patch first before re-installing the file or I won't be able to access Microsoft pages again) or do I not bother, even now though some of my favourite Web sites are still showing a blank page, although listing the correct site address and stating done in the task bar.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

The fix only applies to IE 6 as I posted - are you running 6 or 7?

Hi Pete , sorry, it is 6, however after I had uninstalled it then reinstalled itself as an update!

I decided to leave it and ran the repair patch, immediately it started crashing again for a few minutes then righted itself (I hope)

I have now taken off automatic downloads and will now choose what is updated, a bit paranoid now!

So hopefully it will behave, but what puzzles me is that as I stated previously at least one of my favourite sites, Ryanair, will only show as a blank page, I needed to access this and found after much trial and error I can open the programme through an old e-mail but instead of going through the normal address have to go through the book a hotel link then onto book a flight,, most odd and very annoying.

The other strange thing is a lot of people had noted their computers started crashing as soon as the updated were installed and although it shows that bad file was installed on 17th Dec. I have only been having the problem for the last week, although another update for XP KB946627 was installed on 21st Dec. I had also intalled some software for a new Casio camera just before the crashing started and originally thought that was the cause of the problem.

Hi Irene, I run XP SP2 Home and also use Belarc Advisor which shows what you have installed in your PC. It shows a complete list of all MS updates and shows if they are installed correctly. If it shows x alongside an update it will tell you to reinstall it. You can hit Details which will take you to MS updates where the relevant info is available and where you can download and reinstall the update. I note from Pete's advise that KB942615 may cause IE6 to crash after the update is installed. This would suggest to me that it would pay to replace IE6 with IE7 as this update was installed automatically on my PC and as I run IE7 I have not had any problems. LOL Neil.
Google for Belarc Advisor if you want it.

Irene - sonmehow I overlooked your last post :(

As you are running IE 6 I would suggest running IEFix which may resolve the problem - it is unlikely to do any harm :)

I second retiredlearner's suggestion of upgrading to IE 7 - download here rather than use Windows Update .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

It is far more secure than IE 6 and has a few new features, but if you don't like it it can be removed through Add/Remove programs - Windows Internet Explorer 7, which rolls you back to IE 6.

I beta tested IE 7 and have used it from the early betas through to the current released version without any issues.

    Why should I upgrade?

    Hi RetiredLearner, thanks for reply,
I spoke to soon, as my computer crashed about 4 times yesterday, I still think it's strange that my computer took well over a week after the named updates were installed to start acting up although the symptoms were exactly the same as others. I am going to trawl through my error log in an attempt to find out exactly when it started crashing and see what had been installed nearest that time.
I have McAfee installed, and also notice that Windows Defender had been updating recently, could there be conflict there? I was on the Microsoft help site last night in an attempt to figure this out but the more I read the more confused I get. I also have Windows Professional loaded and keep getting updates on that.

I don't know why I classed myself as intermediate on my profile, I am only proficient in eBay!!!!!

Hi Pete, thanks for that, i will try the fix first, i am a bit reluctant to try 7, I have read a lot of bad things about it acting up and people having to go back to 6, it is so annoying when my computer was fine before and now I may have to muck about changing things.
The trouble is I just blithely let all these updates in when they may not even be necessary as I never use half of the programmes like front Page anyway.
that is why I think I will pick and choose now , after reading about them first, what is to be installed.
Been on here for 30mins now and no crashes!!!!!!!

Hi again Pete, I have looked at the fix instructions and as usual am confused!

Can I just follow the 2nd part of No 3? Only because the other bits frighten me to death!

Funnily enough I still haven't crashed yet (fingers crossed) and my blank page on the Ryanair web site is back on. I am tempted to leave well alone but I will keep the fix site just in case.

You can although that only re-registers IE's library files and does not repair the installation.

I would leave well alone while everything is working - no need for a fix :)
