    Hello,

I am new to this board. I have downloaded the full version of Netscape7.1, and would like to completely uninstall it so that I can reinstall it without all the extras (except AOL instant messenger. But if I can get that elsewhere, I would rather do that). I already removed it once through add/remove programs, but when I reinstalled, there were all the things I didn't want. It didn't ever remove the AOL stuff, or the WINAMP. How can I do a clean uninstall? I should add that someone directed me to a web page(home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall.html) but I couldn't figure it out from there. I did get here from there. I have currently 4.72, and would like to keep it around at least for now. 7.1 is cool, good sometimes at loading web pages, but everything is very slow right now, like email, and starting up the program, and I think it's the extra stuff. Thanks for your time. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Welcome to the Forum, Lyle!

    Hi Lyle,

Glad you found your way to the Netscape Navigator Forum!

If Netscape 7.1 seems to be sluggish, I wonder if your system meets the requirements:

    Windows Operating Systems
    Windows 98
    Windows 98SE
    Windows ME
    Windows NT 4.0
    Windows 2000
    Windows XP

    Minimum Hardware
    Pentium 233 MHz
    64 MB RAM
    52 MB hard drive space
    ---

If so, and this is not an issue, then I can simplify the "Clean Install" for you, as you are not experiencing crashes, errors, etc.:

Back up the Netscape 7.1 Profiles Folder
Disable your AntiVirus and any other software you have running in the background. You can see these programs in the Task List by presssing:
    Control + Alt + Delete

Once this is done open the Add/Remove applet
    Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove
Navigate to Netscape 7.1 and click on the "Add/Remove" Tab

    Reboot the PC

If you need to do a ScanDisk or Defrag, this is a good time to do so.

    If not: Install Netscape 7.1
    Select: "Custom Install "

If you want a Release without AOL included you might want to try the
    Compact Version, from Holger Metzger.

Let us know if you have more questions.

    Ramona :D

    Hi again Ramona,

Thanks for your response. My computer does meet all the requirements for Netscape 7.1: I have a Compaq qith a 6G hard drive (about 1.33G free) 480mg RAM 450 AMD processor. It's about 4 years old. I have already done the "add/remove programs" to uninstall 7.1 but it didn't uninstall the AOL stuff or the WINAMP stuff that I fear is slowing me down so much. I tried to install the slimmer version after uninstalling anyway, and put the shortcut icons for the AOL and WINAMP in the recycle bin. It said if I wanted to get rid of the program to go to add/delete programs, but of course AOL wasn't there!

I looked up an archived article in Smart Computing about clean uninstalls. It said I can go to My Computer, C:/, Program files, and get rid of programs this way. Do you think this would be a clean uninstall, ridding me of the excess programs, so that I can get the "Custom Install" and not have the extras? Is this more dangerous than it sounds? I said I was an intermediate user--I may have exxagerated! I feel I know just enough to be dangerous. Thanks for your help! Please let me know what you think about getting rid of the files this way. I have not ever done it before, but am sort of excited about it, as I think it may hold some answers to why I have only 1.33G free and I don't have much on there. Except perhaps old evil hidden program files! Maybe... Thanks in advance!

    -Jo

You could delete programs from c:\program files, but this is not recommended unless you have experience doing manual uninstalls. Many programs throw files in the windows and program files directories, along with entries in the registry. Using add/remove programs or a program's uninstall menu entry is the recommended method. In short, don't do it unless you know what you are doing.

Anyway, I am sure the users in the windows forum can help further, since there are other things you can do to gain free space.

    HTH ;)
