Trying to cleanup installed programs. On a couple of programs I receive the error message, "Can't uninstall ... program not registered ". To register the programs I need the serial number which I do not have. They were probably free trials. Is there any way to uninstall them w/o having a registration number?

An example (name of the program) would be a good idea;)

If you post the application names we can perhaps help.

possibly try and reinstall the apps then unninstall from the control panel "programs and features" ?

If this doesn't help maybe try using ZSoft Uninstaller

backup and or set a restore point before you try any brutal remove methods so you can rollback ;)

Hi. Just looking at one at a time.

Download and install DrawPlus 6.02 update (4.30Mb) Latest fixes for the DrawPlus 6 program
    http://www.serif.com/download_now.asp?id=up009 Directly HERE

    Then try uninstalling it.
By the way, the "program not registered" error is not talking about the program itself being registered, its talking about Windows registering the DLL system files so it is installed properly.
Think of registering (in Windows) as installing all the associated specific program files into Windows.

Also note: Serif products are not compatible with Windows XP 64-bit (most won't have this anyway)

Please let me know if after doing the above you can then successfully uninstall DrawPlus.
Then we'll get to the next one ;) By the way, do you actually have a scanner?

Thanks to you both. I'll give your suggestions a try.

BTW, while my PC is a 64 bit machine, I am only running 32 bit. Originally drivers for 64 bit were lacking. Would it be of any advantage to re-install? Some things aren't as they appear in practice. E.g., I run Photoshop a lot and even though I have 4GB of RAM, Photoshop won't recognize that amount. In fact, my System Properties only recognize 3GB. ??

Although XP can have a switch placed in the Boot.ini file to see ~3.2Gig
In reality XP cannot use above 2Gig Maximum Ram, therefore you can safely remove 2 Gig (I would)

If you are running XP 32Bit, then that is good
Yes the machine can support 64Bit, but you may never install 64Bit Windows on it, especially since you run XP.

Photoshop is said to use a lot of Virtual Memory (not exactly Ram)
You can set your Virtual Memory (Pagefile) up as "System Managed Size" as Windows will automatically optimize and use the best Pagefile size as it needs it.

To set up the Pagefile in XP
    • Start > Run > rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL sysdm.cpl,,3 > ok
    • Click on "Performance" Settings button (its the top one)
    • Click on the Advanced tab
    • Click on Change button
    • Select "System Managed Size" then click on Set button
      OK > OK > OK > Restart

    Kimsland,

Updated DrawPlus and was then able to uninstall! Thanks. What would you now suggest for ScanToWeb ??

Thanks also for the info on RAM limitations in WinXP and for the recommendation wrt Photoshop virtual swap space. Another way to set virtual memory for paging is via System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings. I set up the virtual memory for paging on a drive other than the Boot drive. In Photoshop I am able to specify multiple scratch disks. Here too, I do not use the boot drive.

If you are using another physical hard drive (ie not a partition)
Then yes you can set C to 50meg min and max, and your other drive to say ~1.5Gig Min and Max (but this needs to be played with a little to be perfect).

The reason for a small Pagefile directly on your system drive (I said C) is because some programs do work better that way, including Office.

    Regarding: ScanToWeb
So this program is also not working? Do you have a scanner? Will you need it working? What happens when you run it exactly?

    Edit:

    Here is the removal command:
    C:\WINDOWS\IsUninst.exe -f "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP PrecisionScan\PrecisionScan LTX\Scan-To-Web.isu"

Thanks ... that's good to know. Yes, I do have the virtual memory on a 2nd physical drive. I have 2 160GB drives and hence lots of space. I maintain all photos on an external drive and backup to another external drive. I have a 3rd backup drive off site.

Never ever think of running Windows XP Professional 64-bit. If you want to go 64-bit, you'll need to upgrade to Windows 7.

    Kimsland,

Wrt uninstalling ScanToWeb. I downloaded Revo Uninstaller ... is a neat utility ... but it also failed. It has a Hunt mode which after activation requires the program in question to be executed. It turns out that it is an Epson Scanner utility with its own uninstall utility. Hence, the problem is solved ... many thanks on multiple accounts .... including the education. Am much indebted!

    Arie,

Thanks for the warning. I have no plans to move to Windows 7 soon.
