Have you tried going through your control panel...under add/remove programs?

dobhar, thamk you for the good links.
    I have given them a try. I have I R 5.5.
The method they suggest will not work for me. When I click on uninstall window , the uninstall button is not active, only repair add other. when I run this it installs 5.5 . I hope I do not have to use the manual system I would be lost in the forest. DO you have another thought? tks.

For anyone else trying to do this: I had a similar prob uninstalling IE a few months ago. Elsewhere in this forum someone directed me to a program call IEradicator that will surgically remove Internet Explorer from Windows. I downloaded it but did not need to use it afterall. The download is easy to find via search for the program name.
