To try and correct a problem I plan to uninstall Communicator 4.79 and reinstall.
The last time I did that I lost my mail and bookmarks.

    Ramona, I'm using your procedure:

    1. I save my users directory to my desktop.
    2. Uninstall 4.79, delete any other files in the Netscape folder, empty recycle bin and restart my computer.
    3. Download and install a new copy of 4.79.
The next step is where I had a problem last time.
    4. Before you launch your newly installed Netscape application, put the User directory back into the Netscape directory. (First you will need to create a new profile with the same name as you old user directory, then Drag the folder back into C:\Program Files\Netscape\ Make sure it is named User and not "Copy of User ".

The way I understand step 4.
I drag my Users directory back in to the Netscape Folder. (making sure it is named Users and not Copy of Users)
    I then launch 4.79.
Create a new profile using my same name.

OK, do I have it right?
    :)

    Not quite right......

    Hi arkie,

First, if you're having problems with Communicator, then you want to also follow Step 2., on the Clean Install page. You will be creating a New Profile.

    Delete the entire Netscape folder
    Then go to C:\Windows
    Delete nsreg.dat and netscape.ini.

Back up your Users Folder to another Folder on your HD (my folder is called "Backups "). Then you won't have to change the name from "Copy of Users" folder.

The way I understand step 4. I drag my Users directory back in to the Netscape Folder. (making sure it is named Users and not Copy of Users) I then launch 4.79. Create a new profile using my same name. OK, do I have it right?

Not quite. You will launch Netscape first after which you get the prompt to create a new profile. After you have created the new profile, close Netscape. Then copy the appropriate files to your new Users folder. I have them listed on the Clean install page.

Just read the instructions again, or print them out so they will be handy when you are doing the unstall/install.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

    Ramona,
The only problem I have with 4.79 is with the mail notification hanging. I thought a new install might fix it.

I was using your instructions here:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/nsbuprof.html#uf

You said in the procedure :
"Copy the folder called User (or Users) to your desktop
(Hold down the Ctrl key and drag and drop the User folder to your desktop.) "

But in your post you say:
"Then copy the appropriate files to your new Users folder. I have them listed on the Clean install page. "
I'm confused, then I don't drag the old users folder back into the new Netscape folder?

Also in this post you speak of making a Backups folder on the HD. Is this better than using the desktop?

Sorry, I'm so dumb about this but I just want to make sure I do it right so I don't lose my user info.:)

    Hi arkie,

The Users Folder article you refer to is a Netscape KB Article, not mine. I've just never been comfortable with placing downloads, etc., on the Desktop, a personal preference. I was referring to the Clean Install instructions

If you are creating a NEW profile, there would be some files that you wouldn't want to copy from the old profile, to the new profile. That would defeat the purpose of the NEW profile.

Making a backup of the Users folder removes any possibility of losing your profile information. You always have the backup! ;)

The NSNotify hang is something that happens occasionally, even with Windows 9x, assuming that you are still using that feature with Windows XP?

    Hi Ramona:

I will go with your recommendation and make a backup copy.

I was living with the NSNotify hanging, it was just occasionally but now it's much worse. Usually just as soon as I start my computer.

    Thanks again. :)
