What happens when you try a new unused cd?

Just tossing out some ideas, not sure if they are valid to your particular issue though:

    - delete the device from device manager and let windows reinstall the drivers

do you have 2 cd drives? make sure both have the correct settings under properties.

    Hmm so just to clarify...

You are using the windows buring utility right? Just adding files to the cd burner drive and clicking the pop up bubble, and choosing data cd...is that right??

How far do you get? You click next and....

    Did this work before?

Do you have any other burning programs? Nero? etc

    Thanks

ok here is what happens. i highlight all the files i wish to put onto disc and drag them into the cd window. i then get all the files with the words files waiting to be written to the cd. there are already 2 files on the cd from a previous copy. on the cd writing tasks i click on write these files to cd.The cd already has a name so i click next. i then get initilizing the cd image followed by the error (there was an error in the writing process. the disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable. after this message i then go and burn out i track to the same cd using either nero or media player and the song burns onto the cd ok. so i know its not the cd, i have a lot of my accounts on the computer and i need to back up these files daily.

    help!!!!!!!

OK, lets take the example in your last (#9) post. After your error message and then the second attempt which appears to be successful, can you then go back and read any of the files that were initially on the same CD prior to adding the last batch? In other words, can you still read all of the files or only the ones you just added?

    ;)

If you start with a brand spanking new disc, can you copy data to it?

Going back to your first post you reference CDR but I believe that to drag and drop files directly to the CD Drive using InCD one has to use CDRW discs. Regardless, I would suggest removing Nero and InCD using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Then I would reboot and using Windows Explorer, remove all remaining files and folders listed as Ahead, Nero or InCD. Then I would use the Control Panel, go to System and remove the drive by right clicking and selecting remove. Reboot again letting Windows reinstall the drive and lastly, try to reinstall Nero and InCD.

    ;)
