I haven't had any trouble viewing images in recent months, with either Firefox (my main browser) or IE (which I only use if a given page doesn't seem to load properly using FF), so I thought I'd resolved the issue of those annoying little gray boxes (with a tiny pink, green and blue geometric figures within it) in the upper right corner of where a picture is supposed to be. But I came across a webpage yesterday that I just cannot get the images to come up on for me: http://www.artthatsnew.com/artwork/scripts/natures-scene/NS-birds-of-prey.cfm
[I can't see the images using IE, either.]
Does it work for anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions about what I might try to get it to work for me, given that I seem to be able to visualize just about everything else that comes up in my online wanderings?
    Thanks!

    Hi Rebecca,

WFM, using the latest Firefox 1.0.4 Aviary build (05-15). One ofthe images (Bald Eagle Flying) won't display, but apparently it's been removed as, when I click on "View Image ", I get "Page cannot be found ".

The same is true using IE.

Beautiful pictures, BTW. Thanks for the link, and I'm sorry you can't see them.

Using FF 104. Pics on the original page (thumbnails) show a broken image. Left click on the space opens up each image separately revealing the images -- except for the "flying Eagle" -- get "page not available. ".

Does not work in Moz1.7.8 or NS8 beta. It, actually, gets worse, if I remove part specific to the images. I tried the validation website , and I got no response. The link is supposed to give a possible cause. But, I don't have SP2, so, this is quite a case. I wonder if this page was tested at all?
Update: I checked in FF1.04, and all thumbnails showed broken link, and left clicking gave nothing more than enlargment, still broken.

Confirmed using Opera 8. The links appear to be broken and enlarging them, of course, does nothing.

    Thanks for all the feedback.
Westside did a better job at describing my situation than I did -- I hadn't mentioned that the little gray boxes were showing up "broken ", or that when I left-click on "view image ", all I get is an enlarged blank (just as he does).
So okay, the images don't work for James, Westside and me, but they DO work for Jim and Bob...
Jim and Bob - any idea in what way your settings might be different from mine?
[Just for the record, the glitch holds true for me in both FF 1.0.3 and 1.0.4.]

    Hi Rebecca,

The only thing I can think of for you to check is to look in Options > Web Features. I have "Load Images" checked and "for the originating web site only" UNchecked.

Same settings here, so it's gotta be something else. If you come up with any other possibilities, I'm going to keep checking back here!
    Thanks!

    Rebecca ...

In IE, look at Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Scroll down to the Multimedia section, and make sure that "Show Pictures" is checked. That controls whether I see the birds in IE, but has no effect on FF. Still can't figure out why you're not able to see them using FF.

    Rebecca ...

Another thought just occurred to me ... have you installed any themes or new extensions lately? You might try uninstalling whatever ones you have installed, just to see if that helps.

My IE settings were as you suggested - still can't view the images with IE either.
I don't even know what a theme is, so it's unlikely I have any of those installed. Spoofstick is the only "extra" I think I've ever installed, and now that you mention it, I realize IT's gone since I upgraded to 1.0.4... I'll have to work on getting that back, but I don't imagine that's related to my image-viewing problems.
Thanks for continuing to crank out ideas for me!
PS - snow on Friday, Sunday, and today here in Longlac -- how's the weather in Long Island?

Hmmm, SpoofStick wouldn't be causing your problem. I have it installed, and I can see the images on your linked webpage. You can turn off image viewing in Prefbar but, if you don't have it installed, that's not your problem, either.

You can check to see what extensions are running with FF by looking at Tools > Extensions. Same for themes but, since you don't know what they are, it should show "Firefox (default) 2.0 ".

Well, the calendar says it's spring, but the weatherman seems unconvinced. Been generally coolish, but yesterday it got up to about 80°. Low 60s today.

Flowering trees are in full bloom, and leaves are well out. Lawn mowing began a couple of weeks ago.

I'll be darned! I don't like foxes in the chicken coop, but the version based on 1.8b2 works the same way as described by JS... The settings are identical in FF1.0.4. I have the original theme, and a handful of extentions.
Now, I go back to 1.0.4, and it works too. I try Moz1.7.8, and it gives me an error, File not found. Same in NS7.2. The first line is: coldfusion.runtime.TemplateNotFoundException: File not found: /artwork/...rds-of-prey.cfm
And, there is a reference back to the Macromedia site.

I'm the most technically challenged on the internet. But to answer Rebecca's question (sorry, work kept me busy til now), I have my Options>Web Features>Load images checked but UNchecked "For the originating website only ".

Maybe this will help a little -- don't know. But, there you are. Good luck, guys & Gals.

This is what was said before. But, I made no changes, and I can see the images in Firefox1.0.4 and a nightly. It seems to me that something has been done to the website. But, all older browser get this message: File not found: /artwork/...rds-of-prey.cfm That includes IE6 and Kmeleon.
I really don't know what is going on.

    Rebecca

Have been following this thread throughout the day.
Was NOT able to view any pics via FF 1.04 or IE 6 full updates.
IE 6 is clamped down tight, and chose not to release site to "Trusted" status.
Through the day, I probably loaded the site 6 to 8 times.
I made NO changes in FF or IE.
I just loaded the site again -- Both FF and IE work.
Not sure if good "Gremlins" have been awakened from the deep ....
or the site trace back high traffic hits from wBBS, read this thread
and changed some of the site script to be more accommodating.

Not fair! Why's it working for more and more of you, and still not for me??
I tried clearing my cookies, cache and history, hoping that maybe my computer had "memorized" the defective version of the page and kept reloading that one, but no go. I did notice, however, that while the page is loading, just above my Start button, I get a whole series of "connecting to/ waiting for naturescene.com" alternating with "connecting to/ waiting for underconstruction.networksolutions.com" messages. When I right-click on "view image" for any of the images, I'm taken to http://underconstruction.networksolutions.com/, where the message is that "the site is under contruction and coming soon ". (I got that page a few times yesterday as well, so that's nothing new.)
I guess I'll try Dennis' tactic, and just keep trying to load the page throughout the day. But I'm still mystified (okay, I'll grant you, it doesn't take much to mystify me on a computer)...
Thanks for all the input, everyone!

Wait a minute! I just tried clicking on the natures-scene.com homepage, and I see one of those green puzzle pieces telling me I'm missing a plug-in -- which turns out to be Java Runtime Environment. I think I recall some hubbub over Java security earlier this year, and I believe I made whatever modifications were suggested in this forum, just to be on the safe side. Might I have inactivated/ damaged/ deleted Java that way (a search for "Java" yields 32 objects, so the program is obviously still on my computer in some form)?
Given the new version of FF and all, is it safe for me to just click on the green puzzle piece and download the plug-in?
    Thanks!

    Hi Rebecca,

Java never occurred to me, as I didn't see any reference to it on the webpage (I looked at the source code, but not very hard :) ).

Before doing anything else, open FF's Tools > Options > Web Features and make sure that both "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" are checked. This probably won't make any difference, since you can't see the images with IE, either.

You can find the latest version of Sun's JRE here. Sun refers to it as both version 5.0 and version 1.5, but it's one and the same. The latest update is #3 (at the link).

Before installing it, use Add/Remove to remove any earlier versions of Java, if possible. If that doesn't work (and it may not), use a program like RegSeeker to clean the registry of any references to Java, and delete the Java folder from your Programs folder.

    HTH.
