Whenever I try to access a secure website via AOL, and I wish to verify that the website is genuine by clicking twice on the small gold padlock in the right hand corner, the verification window will not open. However, if I access the website via Firefox I can access the authentification window.

I asked AOL about this and they said:

"open Internet explorer and click on tools and click on Internet options and click on advanced tab and then under security uncheck the option verify the publishers certificate and hit OK"

I did this but it did not work. Has anyone any idea what the problem is?

    Operating system: XP

    THANKS

Admin is right, Steve R Jones.

I am talking about a secure website not this website. I am talking about a website which has a little gold padlock at the bottom of the page not this website. I am talking about a website where you might be accessing (for example) credit card details not this website.

In IE7, it isn't on the bottom like it was in IE6 and earlier. It is on top beside your Address Bar. It only appears when you go to https sites.

All of your AOL uses will be through their proxy servers. AOL is a fairly unique ISP in passing all traffic through a proxy. You are asking in essence to have the proxy server pass back to you the Certificate information that conforms to what you have either as a local filestore, or is on the site as Certificate information and validate it against your IE settings.

It is not doing so. Nor, will it in a way that IE views as safe.

Now if the certificate information is remotely, and not locally stored on your machine, you could make IE settings that can help the proxy validation issue. But I would rather not have you make the changes needed. They are in most cases perfectly valid controls over certification and the use of Active-X.

My best advice: use Firefox to validate the site. Then use either IE or Firefox later to use it.

If you do want to amend this behavior, use the Tech Support at the site and not AOL Tech support to answer the question. The answer you have already received from AOL Tech Support suggests a different Tech Support resource is advised.
