I am unable to share an HP Deskjet 722c printer on wireless home network.

On a Dell P-4, running Windows XP Home, connected to a Netgear Wireless router, I set up an HP Deskjet 722C printer to be shared using the Network Setup Wizard. Everything seemed to go OK.

I also have a Compaq P-II laptop, running Windows 98SE, with an AT&T Wireless Cardbus running successfully on this wireless network. That is, the laptop successfully acesses the Internet via the wireless router connected to my Dell desktop.

I also set up Printer Sharing (but not File Sharing) on this laptop, as well as the Desktop.

THE PROBLEM: When I click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the laptop desktop, it sees the default setup of the MSHOME workgroup (named identically on both desktop and laptop computers), BUT the only computer shown is the laptop itself. The Desktop computer does not show on the network and consequently the laptop cannot see or access the Deskjet 722C Printer.

Further, when I open Control Panel on the Desktop and click the Printers and Faxes icon, then click the default Deskjet 722C printer and, under Printer Tasks, click "Share this printer," the Deskjet 722C Properties sheet comes up with "Do not share this printer" chosen by default. When I click the "Share this printer" radio button and click OK I get the following error message:
"Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed. "

I have read posts that suggest this HP 722c printer is not networkable and others post that they have successfully networked it.

Any, ideas, solutions or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

    tvjohns P.S.

    Forgot to mention 3 items:

    1. I'm running Windows XP Home on my Dell Desktop WITHOUT the Service Pack 2 super-colossal upgrade (I have it; too chicken to install it).

    2. I also have MS's built-in Internet Connections Firewall turned OFF (the Network Setup Wizard enabled it automatically, but I turned it back off -- because:

    3. I'm running Symantec's Internet Security Personal Firewall app (as well as Norton AV 2005).

It would be risky to connect to the Internet on an un-updated system. I'd updated SP2 right away on my computers. The 'security upgrades' and other fixes in SP2 are important, and they don't interfere with networking. If the Windows Firewall is enabled, configure it to allow file and printer sharing on the LAN unless you are using a personal firewall program.

I cannot specifically answer your printer problem. That's the first I've seen that error. Have you checked the manual about it being able to share over a network? What does it say? If you haven't already, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and see if that helps.

Make sure that Symantec's Internet Security Personal Firewall program is properly configured to allow access over the local area network.

I have been trying to solve this same problem for the past two days. I finally found a website that explained each step and included screenshots (every other website seems to think writing alot of text is better than a screenshot). I wish I had found this at the beginning of the weekend.

I have a Netgear WGR614 wireless router connected to my desktop (Windows XP Pro), two printers connected to the desktop and a laptop (Windows XP Home) with a wireless connection to the Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I can now access the shared printers and access my drive on the desktop.

    Hope this solves your problem.

I've been having this same problem.... just today, actually. I keep getting the "Printer settings could not be saved. Operation could not be completed." message when trying to share my Lexmark 2200 from the host computer. Hopefully this solution works.
