    Hello there,
On a Windows 2000 server, we are having issues redirecting the "My Documents" folder for our users.

The users' home directories are \\Server\username$. We would like to redirect 'My Documents' to point at that.

At present, we have set it to redirect to \\Server\%USERNAME%$, however, this does not work, and the eventlog reveals:
"Failed to perform redirection of folder My Documents. The fully expanded paths for the folder could not be determined. The following error occurred:
The specified path is invalid. "

    Please advise.

How about This approach using GPO?

Or Another way that is a little more similar to the way you are trying now.

Thank you for the above sites.

At present, the home folders are \\Server\username$, all documents are stored in that folder with no 'my documents' folder inside it. The share is mapped as Z: when the users logon. Via GPO, how would I redirect this?

PS: All of the actual folders reside in the "Accounts" share on the server.

    Thank you very much

Took a weekend plus a day off and just now seeing this. Haven't forgotten you but too late now to try and post anything that needs to make sense. Should get to it earlier tomorrow evening.

I am having the exact same problem. Our old File server died and the new one has a different name. I added a Group Policy to redirect My Documents, but that didn't work. Did you ever figure this out???

Well I just solved my issue. I had to edit the Folder Redirection GPO for My Documents and to uncheck the " Grant the User Exclusive Rights to My Documents ". I had to do this because the users home folder on the File Server was premade by me. You are suppose to check this option if the folder hasn't been premade and you want windows to make a folder for you. They say that it is preferred not to premake your home folders. I'm not sure that this helps your question out or not. Let me know if you still haven't solved yours.

It seems to me that you need to redirect to: \\Server\Accounts\%username%. Or are all of the user folders shared as well?

I have set what you recommended, and I still receive the same error. All of the home directories were pre-made, and are shared as Username$.

Do I want everyones folder to be redirected to the same location?

Ok, lets say that you have a user named bob.smith and you shared out his folder named bob.smith with a share name of bob.smith$

When you right-click on the bob.smith folder, go to properties, then the shared tab, click on permissions, you should have the everyone group set with full access(read, write, execute). Then go to the Security tab and click the advanced button, highlight bob.smith and click the edit button make sure all of the permissions are checked including "Take Ownership ".

Is all this set?? It doesn't matter where everyones folders are located on the server as long as the users home folder is shared out that person can get to it by going to \\server\bob.smith$ or \\server\%username%$

One more thing to test is have the user open IE and type the following into the address
    \\server\bob.smith$
Are they able to access it or do they get an error??

Is the fact that 'Take Ownership' is not ticked a problem? I have set permissions so Admins have full access, and the user whos home directory it is has Write access.

Impressed by your patience - thanks for the help.

I just read a couple of places that if the user wasn't an owner then you could experience some problems. Test it out with one user and see if that is the case.

*Sighs* No luck. Given the user FULL rights, etc. I'll just have to find another way to achieve this.

Going to 'start' 'run' and \\server\%username%$ on one of the users' accounts works fine, but the error in the event log is that the network path cannot be found...
