When I shut my computer off, an error window pops up briefly... too short a time for me to read what it says.

    - how do I slow it down (or pause it) so that I can read it?
    - I "think" it is either a corrupted file or a missing Windows file but again... I can't be sure. Any ideas how to proceed?

    Thanks.

Try "Logging off" of the computer instead of shutting down. Sometimes this will "slow down" or keep the error message on the screen.

Ah...thanks. I finally got it. It reads:

The application failed to initialize because the Windows Station is shutting down.

So...how can I get rid of this?

When this error window is displayed, are their any letters (possible ending in .exe) on the top left corner (in the border portion of error window). This would give us a clue to which program is having the problem.

Ah... yes... I think it is:

    kpf4gui.exe

I have Kerio Personal firewall and I'm thinking this must be connected. Any ideas?

Your not going to be thrilled with the solution from Sunbelt ... there is none, for now. See this thread at Castlecops. On page four of this thread is a response from Sunbelt Kerio ...

I'm in the same boat as you are James. I performed a clean install, had to request a 2nd key because subscription date did not update correctly (paid version). I have the error you are experiencing and have the License wizard run at bootup (I cancel the screen). Needless to same, not impressed with my first ownership of Sunbelt Software.

James .. Just a heads up.... If you are using paid version.
Click on Intrusions in left column.
Doyou have "Enable Application Behavior Blocking" ticked (active)?
If yes, click on "Advance" and click on "Settings" tab.
I have "use existing behavior blocking rules or ask me" active for all three phrases. The problem is I've notice, the program does not follow normal logic for Kerio. When Kerio "ask me ", I can choose "Permit or Deny ". IF I do not tick "write a rule ", this is a one time answer to this action. BUT, I have notice (with Deny response) it will write a rule (click on Applications tab to see which programs have rules set against them) when my choice said NOT to write the rule. Caused me some grief until I found where in Kerio this was occurring.

    Hi Dennis,

If you're interested in a process firewall (behavior blocking) - of parts of the OS as well as apps:

System Safety Monitor: http://syssafety.com/ The free version has been split out of the paid version which I use, fairly recently, so getting a lot!

I use KPF 4.0 as well, but don't use the Behavior blocking option, thanks for the heads up :)

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks Charles
Will give SSM a good look. Noticed it does run on w98, OS on kids networked attached computer. I try to choose security tools which run on w98 and XP to minimize the learning curve.

    Hi Dennis

I contacted Support and here is the workaround they provided (then my comment):

Let's replace some files in your directory.

Close Kerio by right-clicking the icon by the clock and choosing Exit.

Open Windows Explorer or My Computer. Go to your default local disk, C:
/ Program Files/Sunbelt Software/ personal Firewall. Delete the
    following files:

    Kpf4ss.exe

    Kpf4gui.exe

Now download these files to a location you can remember like your
    desktop:

    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/kpf4ss.exe

    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/kpf4gui.exe

Right click on each file from your desktop and choose Cut:

Paste into C: / Program Files/Sunbelt Software/ personal Firewall where
you just deleted those other files.

Restart your firewall; restart your machine to test the fix.

    Let me know the results.

Unfortunately when I followed these instructions I completely lost the use of my Kerio Personal Firewall (and yes... I also use the paid-for version). I've sent my predicament back to Support so I'll let you know what their response is. Meanwhile I've enabled Windows Firewall so that I'm not sitting completely naked (although I am behind a NAT router).

    Thanks for the help.

All is well. I can't get over how quickly this company responds to support.

Here is the advice (which worked beautifully I might add):

    I would uninstall and reinstall:

    1) Click on the Start button and go to Control Panel.

    2) Double click on Add/Remove Programs.

    3) Find Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall in the list of installed
applications. Click on the Remove button.

    4) If you did set a password then you will be asked to supply it before
    the firewall will uninstall itself.

    5) Reboot Windows after Kerio Personal Firewall is uninstalled.

    6) Now go to the Start Menu/Search. Do a search for anything named Kerio
    and delete anything found.

    7) Now install again:

For the rest of us with similar problems, but have not downloaded files in your post #10 ....

    A) Do we need the above files. If yes, when do we insert them?
    B) At your Step#6, do we also search, clean Registry?
    C) Did your previous (License) Key work on this install?
    D) Did you export settings / import to new install --- or not recommended?

    Thanks James

I can't answer question A) but I suspect that you should try there first (just as Bill had me try that before going the full nine-yards of re-installing). As for question B) I never ventured into the Registry to do any sort of cleaning. The only cleaning done was the cleaning he told me to do that is outlined above. In answer to C), yes... my previous license key worked on this install. In fact, when I went in to see if I needed to re-register my copy, my license key was already there. I did not need to copy it or insert it. As for D), I did not export or import any settings for the new install. When I rebooted, I followed his last instruction which was: 6) Now go to the Start Menu/Search. Do a search for anything named Kerio and delete anything found. Now install again. He gave me a link to where the installation could be found... essentially back to the Sunbelt site to download the evaluation copy (which as I said... somehow picked up my license key and became the "paid-for" version).

    Hi James

It half worked for me . No longer have "The application failed to initialize because Windows XP is shutting down ". But I continue to have "License Wizard" display at bootup and/or Log on (I cancel screen). Since the License key is a registry entry, my suspicions lie in a Kerio / registry issue. Keep in mind I hand to request / replace the "License.txt" file on previous install due to a subscription dating problem. Checked expiration date / subscription and it was correct in today's install. It also reloaded settings.
Again James, thanks for all your time and effort.

Dennis...why not try Support at: support@sunbelt-software.com

I have nothing but good to say about the response time and accuracy of working around our problems.

    All the best.
