I am the only user of my two computers, a desktop running 64-bit Win7 Pro SP1 and a laptop running 32-bit Win7 HP SP1, each with four partitions, on a home network. The computers see each other in Windows Explorer and are able to copy and move files to and from the various partitions, with one exception ... neither computer is able to access the C: partition on the other computer.

Instead, I get a Network Error message stating that I don't have permission to access that partition, despite the fact that sharing is enabled, and full permissions have been granted. This is true no matter what type of network the computers are set up on, homegroup, office, or public.

I have tried changing the ownership of the two C: partitions from the default "TrustedInstaller" without success ... I still get the Network Error message.

This one has me tearing my hair out. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Jim,

Try and put the IP address of the computer you are trying to access then the "c drive" share name! e.g \\192.168.0.1\Sharename
let me know whats the outcome.
    Cheers

The C partition is shared for administrative purposes only. Try creating a new share for each C partition and then set advanced permissions for the new share.

But I must say this: sharing the C partition is not a good idea because it then gives malware the permissions to infect the C partition on networked computers in the event of an infection. It also extends permissions to remote desktop clients and peer to peer clients.

Also, always best to use password sharing.

It doesn't work, for any partition on either computer.

The new share suggestion didn't change a thing.

I hear what you're saying, and I'm content to leave things as they are. Frankly, it was more a matter of wanting to be able to do something than actually needing to do it. In the infrequent instances when I need to access something on the C: partition on one computer from the other computer there are other ways to do it.

It didn't seem to be a problem when I was using XP but Win7, apparently, is a different kettle of fish.

    Easily done if:

    1. use password sharing on both comps. (NO homegroup).
    2. create a user account for comp B on comp A, and vice-verse, admin group, use same name and password used to logon to own comp.
    3. create the new share for C drive on both comps.
    4. add permissions for each new user.
    5. reboot both comps.

    When changing permissions, do:
Advanced Sharing button > Permissions button > Add button > Enter object name = name of new user account from #2 above.
