I'm running 64-bit Win7 Pro SP1, and am posting this using Pale Moon 24.2.2, a 64-bit version of Firefox.

Firefox 26.0 will not open, even in its Safe Mode, even though Task Manager shows FF in the Processes list. I have reinstalled it with a clean profile, but it still will not open. However, it WILL open in Windows Safe Mode, but will not connect to the internet, telling me that my proxy settings are incorrect. I don't understand this, as I have never used a proxy with any browser. On the other hand, Pale Moon WILL connect to the internet in Windows Safe Mode.

I have thoroughly checked my computer for viruses and malware, using numerous different programs, and it's completely clean. In addition, I've run both chkdsk and sfc /scannow, and everything is as it should be.

This has me completely baffled, and any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had that problem of Firefox not wanting to open in XP a time or two, but not on Windows 7. I remedied my situation by installing a fresh copy of Firefox over the old installation.

I know little about proxy settings, but I did notice that my version of Firefox (26.0) is set to use system proxy settings.

As I mentioned, FF will open in Windows Safe Mode, so I checked the proxy settings and found them set to "Use system proxy settings ".

After changing the setting to "No proxy" I was able to get online, but I'm still unable to open FF in normal Windows.

By Safe Mode you mean > Help > Troubleshooting > Reset FF to default state? I'm running FF 27.0 Beta and it's using Proxy Settings. Neil.

    Neil ...

No, I meant Firefox Safe Mode (firefox.exe -safe-mode), which starts FF without any addons. If I start FF in Windows Safe Mode, I can select Reset, but it doesn't carry over to normal mode Windows, where I'm unable to start FF. As I also said, I can connect to the internet (in Windows Safe Mode) only if I select "No proxy ".

    Tony ...

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anything there that applies to my situation.

    I would do:

    1. start FF Windows Safe Mode > export bookmarks.
    2. restart comp normal mode > uninstall FF.
    3. delete FF user profile & all other FF dirs (<user>/appdata/local, <user>/appdata/roaming).
    4. reinstall FF > import bookmarks.

    Tony ...

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm way ahead of you, as I'd already done all that, with no success.

Taking another tack, just to be on the safe side I copied my Pale Moon and Thunderbird files to an external hard drive, backed up my Registry using ERUNT, then deleted as many Registry references to Mozilla as I could using RegScanner.

After rebooting to delete the remaining Mozilla entries, I reinstalled Firefox and, wonder of wonders, it opened normally, as did both Pale Moon and Thunderbird.

So, the problem was, apparently, with a Mozilla (Firefox) key in the Registry, but I have no idea what caused it in the first place.

Incidentally, for anyone who's interested, 32-bit Firefox and 64-bit Pale Moon run side-by-side very nicely.

Thanks for posting that, Jim. It's amazing how a few invalid registry keys can gum up the works.
