My antivirus program (AVG) has occasionally identified a worm in an incoming email (I think it's always been Netsky when I've gotten this message), and subsequently told me it's unable to move the virus to the quarantine vault.
    Two questions:
    1) I've never opened any of the attachments containing these items, but it the Netsy worm able to infect my system anyway?
    2) My reaction to the AVG warning has always been to delete the email and shut down Outlook Express (settings are such that deleted mail is "gotten rid of" whenever OE is shut down). Is this really enough to get rid of the infected email, or am I just kidding myself? Is there something more "proactive" that I should do instead?
    Thanks!

    rebecca,
I think you're safe so far. However, now-a-days you need more than antivirus software. Read this thread and the other "stickies" at the top of this forum. Adaware and spybotS&D are recommended, as well as spywareblaster and spywareguard. Be sure to upgrade each frequently and the first two before each use.

Rebecca - you're doing OK, but to give youself peace of mind run the Netsky Removal tool from Symantec. AVG may well have one too, but the source doesn't matter.

If you are clean that will be indicated, if infected the virus will be cleared.

Pete, thanks for the link to the Netsky Removal tool. Given that I never paid attention to which variant of the Netsky worm AVG was identifying, would you recommend I download and run all 13 of the Symantec tools, or is that outright overkill?
Sparrow, I'm going to go start a new thread to ask you another question about the programs you recommended, since there are probably other folks out there who might be interested in your reply, and wouldn't know to look here for the information!

    thanks,
    Rebecca

There is only one Removal tool - download from the link under Obtaining and running the tool - step 1.

The links at the top of the page take you to a description of each of the variants of Netsky and the link for the Removal tool on those pages takes you back to the URL I posted - the one you started from :)
