    Hello.I am using Win95B and Communicator 4.75.
This browser has been increasingly balky, requiring
reboot to make it operate. So I decided to download
    a more recent browser,Communicator 4.79,and it
    downloaded smoothly,although I wasn't able to indicate

which drive I wanted it to go in.A box called
"Viewing Location" tracked the download. But when download was done a box with the following message popped up "Unable to launch application.Application was not found." I clicked ok and it disappeared.
The downloaded file cc 32 479.exe wasn't even found
    on the computer.What's up?
I downloaded it again from another site and got
    this "Unable to launch application.Reason=31"
    Please advise.

    Terry,

Welcome to the board. Hopefully Ramona, our resident Netscape expert will offer a couple suggestions soon. In the meantime, I checked my computer for the file name. The file for 4.79 that I have is sd_cc32d479en.exe. Do you have that file?

I have 4.78 installed and it has been pretty good. Maybe you want to try 4.78 to see if it will install for you. You can download it from here.

    unable to launch application

Mike,I tried to get 4.78 from the Netscape archives, but the same response happened. "Unable to launch application;application not found ".Normally
when I download, a "Save As' box allows me to indicate into which drive I want the file to go into.During these attempts to get a new browser the downloads were tracked by a "Viewing Location" box.I wasn't given any choice. The cc32d478 (or9).exe file wasn't even found on the computer when I checked with the "Find Files" feature.I searched all drives. The 23MB file disappeared as soon as I clicked OK after the "Unable to launch "
    message.
I have had dialogue with Ramona before and have faith in her expertise.

    Possible cure.

Often the cure for that malady is:

MY COMPUTER > VIEW > OPTIONS > FILE TYPES > WINZIP FILE > EDIT > and tag box labeled "Confirm open after download" (If using other Unzip program or file types, adjust accordingly)

Of course that applies only if you have Winzip installed. If you are using some other decompressor, you'll have to browse to it instead and tag that box.

Edit. To further explain, There is a very good likelyhood that the .exe file you downloaded is a self executing Zip file and what that error message is telling you is, the system can't find the application necessary to open this type of file. Either you have no unzipping utility or the association has been lost. The strange thing is that instead of leaving the file in the Windows\Temp directory (the default) it is deleting it. Very strange behavior. Still, if you tag the box mentioned, it will let you direct the download to wherever you choose and make it easy to easier to find and also stop it from being deleted.

Furthermore, you can usually work around this behavior by Right Clicking the file and selecting "Save Target As" and then directing it to wherever you like.

    Further Corroboration: HERE and HERE

    Good Luck

    Hi Terry,

The key to this problem is:
Normally when I download, a "Save As' box allows me to indicate into which drive I want the file to go into.
I'm not sure why you're not getting the "Save As" window.

Are you using SmartUpdate/Download or any other third party download manager? If so disable them and try again. Also do the basic maintenance steps, by deleting all your Cache files, including fat.db, netscape.hst., etc. Also delete all *.tmp files.

In the meantime I'm looking for a solution. . .

    Terry,

It can never be the easy solution, can it! I did some looking on the Netscape site and found this.

I don't know if it will help, but you might want to take a look. Just scroll down to the "After downloading, I can't find the Communicator installation file" section. It will give you something to try until Ramona has another suggestion for you.

Have you tried the right-click suggestion that Zephyr mentions? I went to the Netscape site and tried both methods to download. Both came up with the "Save As" box.

    Hi Mike,

Yes, I did see the page you indicate, and this is what prompted me to ask if she had used SmartUpdate/Download:

    ----------
If you've used SmartUpdate to upgrade, no files will remain on your system after the update. If Communicator was not upgraded, please follow the directions in the SmartUpdate FAQ located at http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer /19971023-6.html or download the installation file from the Communicator Product Information page.
    -----------

I would use this site to download:
    ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english/4.79/windows/windows95_or_nt/

unable to launch application;application not found etc.

Hello Ramona,Minnesota Mike and Zephyr.I just want
to tell you that I successfully used IE5,my other browser, to download cc32d479.exe using a "Save As" window to allow me to direct into which drive
I chose to save the file.
Today I went to the drive I'd selected, double clicked on the file name, and installation proceeded smoothly.
I wasn't using Smart Update or any download manager before when trying to download; it just didn't work as I explained.
Just to test, I tried to start downloading the Netscape 479.exe file again using my new installation and again got that **** "Viewer Location" window.
I had checked the Winzip>Edit>Confirm open after download ,and it was already selected.
Oh well,IE5 is helpful.Netscape is my default and I would like to use it exclusively, but at least I completed my task.Again thanks for all your help.

    Good going!

    Hi Terry,

Seems you still have a problem, even though you were able to get through the install using IE. I am going to try and find out what's going on with the errors you're getting.

If you want to follow through on this, check your autoexec.bat file, located in C:\Windows, and see if you have these entries:

    SET TEMP=C:\Temp
    SET TMP=C:\Temp

    OR

    SET TEMP=C:\Windows\Temp
    SET TMP=C:\Windows\Temp

I'm not sure this would help, but it certainly will do no harm. Let me know whether or not you have any of the above entries, and we'll go from there.

    checking my autoexec.bat

Hi Ramona,I used "Find" to find the entry you wanted and located SET TEMP=C:\TEMP.I didn't see the second line you gave me that was paired with it.(SET TMP=C:\TEMP) Was I supposed to look for the pair??

    Hi Terry,

Yes, they should be paired. When you opened the autoexec.bat file with Notepad, there was only one entry:

    SET TEMP=C:\TEMP

    Correct?

If so, on the next line directly below the above line, add:

    SET TMP=C:\TEMP

    Netscape recommends
    Set TMP=C:\Temp
    Set Temp=C:\Temp

If you use those.... make sure you have, or create the folder C:\Temp

    I have mine set as

    Set TMP=C:\Windows\Temp
    Set Temp=C:\Windows\Temp

Mind, Terry, this may not do any good at all, but as I said before, it will do not harm either.

I'm still trying to get more information on your errors. I also want to know what gives!

    unable to launch etc

Ramona, um, how do I open autoexec.bat file in Notepad?? I used the Find feature before and checked C: drive for autoexec.bat, found several entries, opened each one and found the one line that I quoted in my last post.Could you give me a
little hint? I don't mess with basic configuration settings as a rule,so could you point me in the
    right direction please.

    Terry L,

I case Ramona doesn't make it back I'll give you some direction.

You can edit files in Windows using several methods so I'll list a few for you to choose from:

Method 1] Highlight the file and hold down the Shift key while right clicking it. The resultant context menu will have an option "Open With" Click that and from the next screen browse to Notepad and click it and then click OK. Don't tag the box regarding "Always open with this program" leave it blank.

Method 2] Go to START > RUN and type SYSEDIT and press enter. You'll get all the main system file cascaded for your easy access. Chose the one you want by clicking on it and it'll come to the front or else close the ones on top of it, either way works.

Method 3] Go to START> RUN and type EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and press enter. The file will open with the DOS EDIT utility.

Method 4] Thus is the long term favorite. Go to START > FIND > FILES and FOLDERS and type notepad.exe in the Named field. When the file is found right click it and select "Create Shortcut" and you should be given the option of sending a shortcut to the Desktop. Let it happen then close out and find the shortcut, right click it and select "Cut" Then go to START > FIND > FILES and FOLDERS and type SENDTO in the Named field this time. When the Sendto folder shows up in the field, right click it and select Paste. Close out and you will now have Notepad on the right click "Send To" context menu to use as you like, such as, Right click Autoexec.bat and select "Send to > Notepad" and it'll open in Notepad for viewing or editing.

Before doing all that in Method 4, right click some file, any file, and see if you already have "Send to Notepad " on board. We wouldn't want two of them there, not that it would hurt anything but people might snicker.

Take care viewing and editing system files. If you mess up, just close without saving and reopen for another free try, no harm is done until you save. No change I should say.

    HTH

Edit, I'll throw another little tip your way, to determine if you actually have those two TEMP folders you're wondering about, go to START > FIND > FILES and FOLDERS and type "temp" in the Named field. Include the quotation marks, it's important this time. With them, the search will exclude files and only show folders. When you get the results, check that you have one that is located on the C:\ position and another that is located at c:\Windows. Pay no mind to the rest of them. FYI, Windows creates the TEMP in its directory automatically and normally you don't need to have a statement in Autoexec.bat for that. The one on the root will likely need to be in there though such as Ramona mentioned.

Sorry for the long winded post but you sounded like you were running short of air. :D

    Thanks Zephyr!

And last, but by no means least...

Back up the autoexec.bat file before you edit.

This is the Netscape KB Article I use for reference, as well as the MSKB Article Q195817 which is referenced in the NS Article.
