    HI ,
I downloaded a .exe file but when attempting to install it received the following error message "Error 0 when running command SETUP.exe" Also the icon has a folder with something like a lock or wrench attached to it.
Anyone seen this before or have any ideas.
    Thanks

Its a windows app called prohoops.exe from sportrends.com. its used like a database to evaluate/handicap nba games. I've talked with someone from the site who says it written in VB4 so it should work on windows7, also their football software downloads and works fine. However no such luck with this one. I have tried changing compatibility settings and allowing all permissions. Hope this helps.

Did you try running the setup file as Administrator? Right-click the setup file and choose Run as administrator

The folder with the lock on it will be password protected. If you purchased the software you should have received a password in order to open it. Try to open the file and see if it asks for a password.

If the software refuses to install there may have been an error in the download, I would therefore advise you to contact the seller and ask them for help.

right click the file and see if there is an option to extract.
i think that error is related to .exe archives.

I am having the same exact issue with the same software, I'm using Windows 7 too. Strangely, it works fine on my other laptop (also Win7). I'm hoping the OP comes back to tell me if/how he got it to run?

I doubt if there is much more advise we can give on this, the problem needs to be dealt with by the manufacturer of the software.

Please let us know when you find the solution.

The guy at the company has been no help at all :( I was able to get a little bit further but still no luck...

I was able to extract all the files and put them into a folder; at first I thought it was a WinZIp issue - it's not. Now I have a new error...
Looking at the 25 or so files, I am able to see the SETUP application. When I try to run it I get a new error: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. CHeck your computer's system to se whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program" Then it says to contact the publisher (which we know is no help).

Was there a choice of downloads for different versions of windows?

The error is asking you to check if you have a 32bit or 64bit system. The version of the software you have downloaded needs to match your system.

    (x86 is 32bit & x64 is 64bit)

plz give us details about your system, are you running a 32 bit OS or a 64 bit OS?
also what version of Windows is it?

akso 64 bit systems can not run anything under 32 (like DOS appz)

There is no choice of downloads for different versions of windows...

I have a 64-bit system with Windows 7 Home Premium.

I downloaded a different software from the same guy a few months ago for a football program with no problem, maybe the installer for this basketball program is just older :(

My other laptop is a 32-bit OS also with Windows 7 (starter) and it was able to install there with no problems.

I think this confirms that the software is not compatible with a 64bit system.

Ccsmith7, what system have you got. If it is 64bit then that confirms my suspicions a little further.

Can you get the manufacturer to confirm that the software is designed to work on a Windows 7 64bit system, or better still get them to post it here:).

I e-mailed the guy again, and his reply was to use the 64-bit version of WinZip?!? I tried to explain I was able to extract the files, and that is the Setup.exe file that is not compatable but he insists it's a winzip issue. Blah, I'll just run it off my older laptop, thanks again for the advice guys!

That does sound like a poor excuse, are you using winzip or the Windows 7 built in extractor.

If you are using Winzip the latest version is 14.5 and it is compatible with windows 7 64bit. If you are using an earlier version that could be the problem.

you cant use XP mode, but you might be able to run your program with the help something like DOS box (i know it works on Vista x64). I am sure there are loads of other free DOS emulators.
