With my previous NS4.6 I could use my username and password to get mail -- but not NS6. Now I have NS7, surely I should get mail? Everytime I enter my password the display goes back to the previous screen. How can I re-teach it to learn my user profile?
    Any ideas?
    David:(

    Hi davidgibbons,

Go to your Mail & Newsgroups Settings:
    Select: Server Settings
    Local Directory

Under Local Directory, does it point to the correct Profile address? Should be similar to this:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\david\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\Mailserver

Let us know if this helps.

    Ramona :D

Do you have a user name subfolder? Just want to be sure we're on the same page...

Better yet, what subfolders (if any) do you have under Profiles:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\?????

Do you still have 4.6 on your system? If so, you can run the Profile Manager and let it convert your 4.6 Profile again.

What did the "Local Directory" setting show in Netscape 7 Mail & Newsgroups settings?

And.... last but not least, what OS are you running; i.e., Windows 95, 98, etc.

    Hi david,

If I could jump in here,
exactly how you are going about getting your e-mail?

If you are using the Mail feature of Netscape7 then try and give as much detail as possible on what is happening when you go to your mail account's Inbox and get your messages.

    FOR WEB-BASED E-MAIL:
If you going to a webpage to get your e-mail, then logging in with your username and password, it might help if you tell us the URL of the webpage, or the name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you are using for e-mail. It is possible that some web-based e-mail is not compatible with Netscape6/7

    No profile for NS7

None This is an empty folder.

I still have NS4.6 on my PC (which runs W98) and this is where I switch to look at my mail now. How can I transfer the profile to NS7?
    David :)

    Here's what happens, Alice

Our messages seem to be out of sequence. Thanks for joining in Alice but my last reply was intended for Ramona.

Heres what happens, Alice: In NS7 when I click on the 'mail' icon, all I get is 'login failed'. If I go to my Netscape home page (which is localy stored bookmarks) and click on the mail icon I get a login screen with my correct user name filled in. But when I fill in my password, it returns me to the original screen.

    David
    :)

Netscape home page gets nearer my mail but still fails

The nearest I get to my Netscape mail is via the Netscape home page (www.netascpe.com). The 'mail' icon at least gets my username right! It then fails

But the same URL on NS4.6 DOES work.

    David:confused:

So you are describing a failure to access your "Web Mail ".

Did you opt to install AIM when you installed Netscape 7.0 PR1? This is a necessary evil (personal opinion only) in order to be able to accesss your Netscape web mail account. See HERE

In your circumstances, my preference would be to create a new Profile for Netscape 7... Or, do a Clean Install

Then make Netscape 7 your default browser:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced
Click the plus sign to expand the Advanced list and click System
To the right select http: and https:
Also check the HTML under file types.

Using Quick Launch can also cause the Profiles to disappear (a bug in Netscape 7) so you might want to disable that feature.

Word of caution: back up your 4.6 Users Folder before starting these procedures. Better safe than sorry! ;)

    Hi David,

I just wanted to jump in briefly since I thought that it would help if you made things a bt clearer.

I'll leave you in Ramona's very capable hands, lest she think I was trying to muscle in on her turf :)

    Editing prefs.js

Of all your options, RamonaI tried to go for creating a new user profille for NS7. I edited prefs.js by adding
user_pref( "aim.webmail.enabled ",true); and renaming the result as user.js. No e-mail still. What else should I have done? Or should I have created an slt file? Or deleted and reinstalled NS7? How?
    David :(

all right, no one is interested in my post.

    Extra information
If you have problem with Netscape's WebMail... You must have Netscape IM (AIM) installed with the Netscape.

    Hi David,

As Alice suggested, there is more information to be gathered from you before we can get you up and running. The two questions she asked are valid indeed, and I would also like to know What happens when you go to your mail account's Inbox and get your messages, if your ISP Mail Account isn't working.

You said that you had no sub folders in your:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles folder

If there is no Profile that most certainly would account for not being able to access any Mail. I will have to assume from this info that your Communicator 4.6 Profile did not transfer, unless it was created when you set up your new Profile? If you created a new Profile, then you have an .slt file. Why don't you checked to see if it's there now:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\yourusername\xxxxxxxx.slt

How can I transfer the profile to NS7?

This should have been done automatically on the install of Netscape 7. It can, however, be done manually.

The nearest I get to my Netscape mail is via the Netscape home page (www.netscape.com). The 'mail' icon at least gets my username right! It then fails

But the same URL on NS4.6 DOES work.

I think this is because you still have Communicator 4.6 configured as your Default Browser. Most importantly, you must enable/activate your AIM account, using the same screen name as your netcenter account, and it should work... if you have a Profile in place for Netscape 7.

I tried to go for creating a new user profile for NS7. I edited prefs.js by adding
    user_pref( "aim.webmail.enabled ",true);
and renaming the result as user.js. No e-mail still.
What else should I have done?
Or deleted and reinstalled NS7? How?

Excellent that you created a user.js file! :D

It may not be necessary to uninstall/reinstall Netscape 7, but if so, here are some guidelines for a "Clean Install ".

Whew! Nosy aren't I, and a lot to sort through, but just take your time. I'd certainly like to peek over your shoulder and look at your files!

    Ramona :D

It must be the reboot after editing prefs.js?

I'm glad to have NS mail working with NS7 but I've been puzzling all day why it came back so suddenly this morning. I had no accidents nor crashes so it must be a combination of adding that line to prefs.js (user.js) and shutting down overnight, When I rebooted this morning my NS7 mail worked again. But when I changed the js without a reboot yesterday, it did nothing. Feasible?
    David :p

    A possible reason

I've been thinking all yesterday about a possible reason for the 'cure' overnight and I can only think of the reboot after adding that extra line to 'prefs.js' (now 'user.js'). This is my best stab at an explanation.
    David :)

    Hi David,

So glad to see that your problem is solved! I think that adding the script to your use.js file certainly can't hurt.

I was reading a few threads on the Netscape 7 Newsgroup late last night and noted that there were a few users complaining that they were unable to accesss their web mail over the weekend. Could be it was on the Netscape end and not yours. It most definitely wouldn't be the first time.

For a listing of more scripts that you can add to your user.js file, see HERE

I did wonder! Anyway thanks Ramona

I did have the same thought that Netscape Mail miight have been playing up at THEIR end. But everything is OK now thanks to your useful tiips. But I think a reboot of my machine was important anyway,
    Thanks
    David :)
