    Hi-

I have lost the ability to enable Auto Protection in Norton AV 2000. I shut it down by right-clicking on NAV in the taskbar in order to install WMP 10.

Next time I rebooted, I opened NAV, options, and checked Auto Protect as well as E-Mail scanning. But the settings refuse to take. I have also tried Clicking the Page defaults for each tab with the same results.

Can anyone help me get this back the way it was? Please help! TIA. :(

    Ann

Sorry, I meant to write NAV 2004.

    Hi, PeteC

I guess it is a common problem, if they have a link for solving this.

I have to wait until I am through with some downloading before I can attempt the steps they recommend. I will let you know how it turns out.

    Thank you very much.

Yes, it was a problem I encountered when I used Norton many moons ago.

PeteC - I've had no luck with Step 2 of the solution: All I get is this:

The SymantecTM AutoFix Tool encountered a problem
The SymantecTM AutoFix Tool cannot test your computer unless your computer has:

Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or higher
Security settings which allow ActiveX controls and JavaScript
Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP operating system
    250 MHz processor or higher
32 MB of memory or higher

I use FF with noscript extension. Switched to IE which I never use and switched to the default settings and I got the same message as above.

    Step 3 did nothing either.

    What is happening? Any suggestions?

    Hi PeteC

Faced with the drastic step of removing Norton, I decided to go another route. My NAV was preinstalled on the computer when purchased.

I fired up the last ERDNT I had on my system and got NAV back the way it should be. I lost a few things, but it was certainly easier to reinstall than removing NAV completely from my computer. LOL!

I can't understand why the Auto Fix Tool would not work as my system falls within the parameters they require. Do you have any idea why this would happen?

    Thanks for your help.

Aah - the value of registry backups :) Glad to hear that you found an easy route to restore Norton.

BTW I use the autobackup facility in ERDNT as a scheduled task to back up the registry each day.

As to why the AutoFix tool would not work I honestly have no idea - Norton has a mind of it's own at times and I dumped it several years ago.

Hi Ann, Having had a problem with installing Norton IS 2007, I would agree that Symantec can be tricky. My thought was as you said it was OEM supply, had you renewed your subscription as I would suspect 2004 was overdue? Neil :)
