A couple of months ago I was downloading Fresh Download. In order to do that, I had to uninstall the current version. After I uninstalled it, I was unable to download the new version or any other of Fresh Devices. Since then I have been unable to download other items. I seem to get some text downloads (for an experiment I tried downloading FlashGet - could download the manual, but not the program), and I can get Windows Updates and Norton virus updates (I think). I downloaded Real Player to have some kind of download manager, but it doesn't work for downloading either. I'm thinking that in uninstalling Fresh Download, some needed file was also removed. I've been very frustrated with this, and I hope someone out there has some ideas!!!

If you think a necessary file is missing, you could do one of two things. First you could run System File Checker -Start -Run -SFC-and check for any missing or corrupt file. Or two you could attempt a repair of IE. Control Panel- Add/Remove -IE - remove/repair.

I think you are on the right track according to this MS KB article. It is talking about Gozilla being corrupted, but since Gozilla is a downloader similiar to Fresh Downloader, it would seem that the problem is the same.

Thanks for your suggestions - I tried the SFC and found several corrupted files that might apply to my problem. I haven't had the time to complete the IE add/remove. I just wanted you to know that I appreciate your help and will let you know how things work out, once I've had a chance to complete the checking. Haven't had any 'puter time except for email in the last few days!

sunight--Unless you have already restored the files SFC told you were corrupt, I suggest you post the names of the files here first. SFC sometimes gives incorrect information.
Then I would try all the other suggestions first and replace the "corrupt" files only if nothing else has worked and your PC is not running well.
Look forward to hearing your results.

Well, I DID restore the files, not knowing what you've replied. These are the files that were listed as corrupted:

    msoss.dll
    cryptext.dll
    crypnet.dll
    cruptui.dll
    mssian32.dll
    mssip32.dll
    mscat32.dll
    setupx.dll

I'm still behind on getting some quality time with the computer to make some real inroads here. It's looking more and more like my anti-virus is unable to update, also. I'm getting mixed messages about I'm up-to-date, and I'm not up-to-date....from my anti-virus program (Norton System Works 2002)

If you restored those files from the Win98 CD, and you have IE 5.5 SP2 or IE6 SP1, you have the wrong versions of some of these files.
A reinstall of IE would be the better thing to do. Trying to Repair IE would only tell you some of those files are corrupt, and to reinstall.
SFC does have the ability to restore those files from where the IE setup files are located, C:\Windows Update Setup Files by default. But, some of them, if I am not mistaken, are part of critical updates, depending on your version of IE.

Mark, I am confused. You said:
If the files were restored from the Win98 CD why would a reinstall from the same CD make a difference in the version of the files? I can see that some updates might have to be done again, but.....?

It seems that I did make a mistake recognizing the names of those files. I checked what was restored against my System folder, and my files are the originals. I am running IE6 SP1. There are only about 157 files beginning with M, my mistake. I have myself in the habit of checking the IE setup files when restoring files with SFC, it not found there, then go to Win98 setup files, if not there, I do some hunting to determine if Directx, MDAC or Jet.

I haven't had the time to go through my files in detail related to IE - yesterday I wondered if I could use another browser to download. So I went to Netscape and was able to download all the things I'd had before from Fresh Devices. That told me that IE was having a problem. Not sure I want to go back to figure it out! Now it seems that I DO have an "inside" problem with my anti-virus program, as it won't download updates. It's a separate problem from the other, though. Thanks for your suggestions and ideas. I've learned a lot! If you have any other ideas, let me know.
