    Hi,
I have been trying to figure out why two different Windows Xp (Home Edition) computers have been experiencing similiar problem with signing onto or into the Internet...One computer has a router and with the assistance of tech support (after all other knowledgable attempts were exhausted), it was determined by tech support that the problem was the NIC card...It had a built in NIC Card connection, which I replaced with PCI Ethernet adapter card, only to have the same problem re-appear a few days later...The second computer which also has a built in connection, does not have a router and is experiencing intermittent problems with signing on...I have been unable to be directed to a known specific fix for this problem but however, it seems the Root Certificate may need to be renewed...My question is, can anyone confirm this or is there any other suggestions one can direct me in that will be a more simplier route to travel than renewing the certificate...Any assistance will be greatly appreciated...

Renewing Root Certificate for internet logon? Beats me. Contact your ISP as it seems that you have some proprietory system to login.

    Hi,
I inadvertently was not specific enough when I mentioned tech support assistance, as that is who I have been in touch with (sorry about that)..The ISP (Comcast), has been to the houses in question plus I have discussed the problem(s) with them by phone...Because the problems are intermitttently, they are unable to find the cause...They do their thing, the connection works fine and they go away until they are called again...Personally I would think the Certificate problem would be Comcast need to keep updated not the home user...

I have also done spyware scans, virus scans, etc as well as checked cables and interior portions of the towers to go along with replacing the NIC card and nothing is finding or fixing the problem at the moment...Very puzzling...

Right at the moment I would seriouly be against making any major changes unless you can honestly pin the problem down to hardware of software.

I am having very similiar problems on all three PCs that are plugged into a Router. This AM I could get everywhere but this site. Now I can get here but have problems with other sites.

Also, I will try to pay more attention because it may also be time of day and/or Internet loading related.

    BillyBob,

Thank you for all your reply's and attempts to solve what appears to be a problem with numerous causes...

Computer#1: Has a router hooked up and installed by me..It also operates a laptop off that router in wireless mode...Their desktop and Laptop remain completely off when not in use...Unable to determine cause right now if it's hardware or software...New NIC Card fixed the problem for a few days and now we are back to square one where no access to the Internet is possible, get "cannot find server error message "...Access to the Internet is not possible under any circumstances but was with the new NIC Card...

Computer#2: Does not have a router or laptop working off of it, and the owner leaves it on 24/7, I believe they have to un-plug the modem and reboot in order to get on the Internet...A new NIC Card has been purchased but has not been installed just yet...To my knowledge they get the same error message when they try to access the Internet but can access after the steps I just explained are performed...Their problem is intermittent...

Note: I have also tried while the problem was happening the IPConfig release and renew steps and was given no IP address on the second computer during one of it's intermittent times and the first computer showed the router...This is why I was questioning the Certificate issue...Driving me bonkers...

All has been just fine until now. I am having ALL KINDS of problems getting to the Internet.

Such as this site I was getting just the IP address and it just sits there for a bit. Then is very slow after that.

Now it is working fine but other sites are messing up.

I had my Wife try from her machines and the results were the same.

Now I must add ( even though I do not think it is the problem ) the only common thing for the machines ( other then the actuall Cable connection ) is the Router.

I am being challanged to a game of Cribbage so will check here later.

    BillyBob,
I would agree but the two computers are at two different houses...The first computer that has a router was ruled out by tech support by by-passing it, connecting the tower to the modem...That's how tech support ruled it out...Personally I know of no other way than that...Than we connected the Laptop to the desktop and determined it was the NIC Card...

On the second computer, I just recalled earlier today I called Comcast (which both computers use as their ISP's), a couple of months ago for the same problem as computer one was having...It was determined to be an issue outside of the house (going from the pole to the house, some type of filter was blocking it)...Now computer two has intermittent problems connecting to the Internet (while computer number one can not access the Internet)...

I think there's a remote possibility the problem is once again outside the house at both locations, but how can I verify such before I call Comcast once again...It will be the second time for both homes if I do...When searching Google, the only possibility I come across for a fix was to renew the Certificate but I have my doubts that's the answer and that is how I came the conclusion it's best to post it here before doing anything further.
