Unable to backup to external drive

    computer: hp pavillion a300n desktop 80gb with ms xp sp3

    I am unable to backup my data to an external drive (usb 2.0 160gb). I am noticing that all my drives are accounted for except for the plugged in external one. It's on, the pc recognize because it detected "new hardware" but I cannot see it when I search for it using the right click command "Start + explore" .
    However, I have a 2gb flash drive I use on the same computer without any problem.

    Anybody has any idea? I am scratching my head here silly.

    Does the external drive have a formatted partition? Rt click My Comp icon > select Manage > Disk Management > see if the drive is listed there.
