    Greetings.

I've downloaded some oracle programming tools and have uncompressed them onto my desktop. After some time I've decided that I do not need to maintain that particular copy of the software so I've deleted.... most of it.

There are 9 un-removeable files involved here. I've used the good ol' dos box (my favorite) and am still unable to get rid of these culprits. I've even resorted to Winternals NTFS Dos Professional to attempt to delete the files, to no avail.

These are only indications as to what is the problem. For instance, when I attempt to delete "LucidiaSansRegular.ttf" the system response is "The filename or extension is too long ". If I simply use Explorer to delete the file the response is "Cannot delete Lucida~1.TTF: Cannot find the specified file ".

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

First a general comment. You'll save yourself grief if you place only shortcuts on your desktop.

Next a question. Are you starting the command window with start~run~command? From the 8.3 filename, I'd guess you are. For almost everything you'll want to do on XP from a DOS window, you'll do better with cmd.exe than with command.com.

Now on to a fix. Boot from the CD to the Recovery Console and do the deletions from there. It gives you a command line screen but with only the very beginnings of XP loaded and anything you have on the PC can be deleted other than a couple of essential OS files that will be in use.
