Evening all (22:55h here in UK)

Been fiddling with my "My Pictures" sub folders tonight ...... choosing a picture from the photos within the folders to be the folder icon ..... simple folder properties change under the customize tab ..... OK?

When I had finished, and finally had all my folders looking and viewing to my liking, a kept going back a page until i was now within the "My Documents" root folder ... showing all the icons for my received files/documents/my eBooks/etc.

When I switched the view to thumbnails, the "My Music" folder icon now had one of my photos from a sub folder within "My Pictures" as its picture, not the normal musical note sitting in a part open folder. Ah, i thought, I will go into the folder properties/customize settings to change it back to it's "default" setting ..... but there is no customize option for that folder.

This photo only appears in Thumbnail view, not in Tiles/Icons/List/Details view.

    I used windows help (F1) to assist me .... only to read;

"You cannot customize the My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music folders. However, you can customize the folders they contain. "

So, how on earth has this folder now decided to show a photograph from another folder as its icon in Thumbnail view.

I can live with this, as my default view for the My Documents folder is normally Tiles anyhow - purely accidental that I 'found' the error.

Anyone throw any light on this one - I have used the powertoys TweakUI to repair icons to no avail - even after a restart.

I seem to remember back in my Windows ME days being able to change the appearance of ANY icon I chose, in a round about sort of way ... is this possible in XP (Professional)?

    TIA

    Seany

Not sure it will help but can't hurt - click on start, on run and
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
You won't see much of anything happening although you may be asked for your XP CD.

Any details on what sfc (system file checker) did will be in an event log.

Did you (hopefully) keep a copy of the SP? Because if it asks for a disk it indicates a necessary system file is either missing or damaged and needs replacing with the correct version.

If not, all is not lost but you will need to download a copy of SP1 and store it on your hard drive then tweak the registry to tell sfc to look in that folder rather than on a CD.

Other possiblilty at this point would be to load SP2 the long way by downloading the 266Mb full SP and having that available.
