I have a parallel scanner and recently I have been getting an error saying that it is not responding because the SCSI cable is not connected properly to the SCSI card. At first this confued me as it is a parallel scanner and their is no SCSI card in my PC, BUT I noticed that there seems to be a cable within the scanner itself. Might it be that this cable has become loose (I'd have to open up the scanner to look at it further)? The scanner IS accessed momentarily when I run the Scanner Test utility (i.e. I can hear it hum), but then promptly stops. Eventually I get the error stated above.

    Thx,

Sounds like your PC is mistaking your scanner for the 1220S (which I own but will probably never use again as I've just bought a digital camera, but I babble). I don't think it's talking about the cable inside the scanner - I think something is totally confused about your scanner. I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for it.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling but I get the same error. When I installed the software the first time (when I bought the scanner) it worked fine, never mentioned any SCSI problems. Don't understand why all of a sudden it thinks there is SCSI anything on this machine, as there are no such components? I even tried downloading the most recent drivers from the UMAX site, but the program can't access the scanner. The physical connection is ok and as I said, with the original program it does access the scanner for a brief moment: it hums and the scanning mechanism moves a tad, but then it stops and eventually I get the SCSI error.

    hmmmm...

This is really grasping here but you might want to try booting into Safe Mode, go into Device Manager, and open all component categories except System Devices and look for duplicates. If you find a duplicate, I recommend deleting both of them and having Windows reinstall that device.

This is a weird one - have you tried contacting UMAX support?

I've emailed their support address 3 times in the past few weeks with absolutely NO response. Some support.

    ..the saga continues...

Well, I tried your suggestion and deleted all the dups (Sheesh, there were a bunch in many of the devices.. some were quadrupled!). After reboot everything was reset properly (no more dups).
Having said that, NOW when I run the scanner test, it gives me a new error once again, after starting to move the scanner device, then stopping abruptly:
"Fast park to Home: Error in ParkUTAToHome ".

My hypothesis is that there is program or function of that name that is either confused OR somehow the scanner has been put into PARK mode. Does that sound feasible to you?

    <scratching head...>

I'm off to their site again to see if there are any clues on it.

    l8r,

Well, I found out why I was getting one of my original errors (DLL files not linking properly) with Pagemanager (Scanner software). It turns out that two files (Msvcrt.dll and Msvcirt.dll) were replaced with newer versions by programs I've installed since 1998. As a result these new DLLs would not work with old software.

So, I had to replace them with the old versions from my original wind98 cd. OF COURSE, after doing the procedure, I found out that I really needed the newer version of the Msvcrt.dll else some of my newer programs wouldn't work <sigh>. SO, I had to re-copy it back to the system dir.

Here is the link explaining the procedure:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q296551

Just KEEP IN MIND, that the above procedure should be taken with a bushel of salt. Always keep a backup[ of the current version before replacing just in case you need to put it back as I did.

    Now the fun news:

I tried the scanner test program again and NOW I get yet another different error! This time it doesn't access the scanner at all, waits awhile, THEN gives this error:

Not sure what to try now... <heavy sigh>
