Hi everyone. (Get ready to read alot and hopefully understand what I'm trying to say ) I need some mega help. A long time ago the link to be able to shut down/restart when you log off, it's been gone. I don't know how to get it back.

That's not my big problem. I did purchase a new PC in May and it's back in the shop for the 4th time! (I've been trying to get a refund, and I don't know what else to do).... anyway, I've been using ADrive and 4Shared to back up my important stuff and I'm not nearly done. Well, now I'm getting low disk space errors on drive C:

I've tried it all, nothing frees up hard disk space. I ran across an article about "Heaping "? I know when you uninstall a program it leaves behind junk, that's where I need to recovery disk space. Does anyone know how to do this? Also, my computer just shuts down for no reason. If it's left alone for 2 minutes, it just shuts down. (It's not caused from overheating, I promise)

Ok, enuff rambling :D Is there anyone out there that can help me recover hard drive disk space AND help make my computer stop just shutting down for no reason. I would really appreciate it ;)

    C Ya!

    Sin

Do you know any other way besides going through the company itself ? If I make a complaint at the BBB, what's that going to do? I need something to get my money back, and they have changed the "policy" so many times, it's really sad.

So, do you have any resources? :D

    Thanks!

Hi sinnimon, and welcome to WindowsBBS :)

    I'm a bit confused.

So is the new computer in the shop, and this is a different computer you cannot seem to free up space on?

It sounds like you are trying to fit too much data into "not enough space ". Get more disk space or burn your important data onto optical disks. You should have backups for your data, if it is on a HDD, the HDD can break down, if it on an optical disk, they can get damaged. Keep your important data in two places at once (and for critical data, what happens if there is a fire?).

If you "squeeze" your data onto your C: drive, what happens when you want to proceed from there?

I believe ADrive and 4Shared are on-line storage sites.

I originally put together a long detailed post but changed my mind and deleted it. Suffice it to say, Welcome to the BBS and, Yes - help is most certainly available. However, the quality of any help one receives is totally dependent on the problem description itself and you have given us very little to work with in your initial posts. Perhaps you want to organize your thoughts and give it another go.

    For starters ......
    Desktop or Notebook?
    Make & Model #
    Hard Drive size?
    Type of Computer Usage
    Stored Data Type
    AV and Malware software installed
AV and Malware software usage (never ---->frequent)
Shop History - Problem and Problem Resolution (each time)
Any other pertinent information you think is important

    ;)

PS - What flavor lipstick did you use on that font?

Personally, I'd even bother with any fixes, and I'd focus on getting a refund.
In no way way, I'd like to deal witha computer , which broke 4 times in 6 months.
A complain to BBB won't hurt, and it actually helped me on one occasion. Write to some help line in your local newspaper.
What company is it , anyway?

I think it's a bit presumptuous to assume that because the computer has been in the shop 4 times since it's purchase, indicates it 'broke' and warrants a refund. We have no idea why the computer has been in the shop, nor if it was really even necessary for it to go there. Again, we need a bit more information from sinnimon, and clarification if the computer with the drive space problem is the same computer that is 'in the shop'.

You are correct. I'm trying so hard to find a program that will free up hard drive disk space, and they are all very expensive. This old computer has about had it :) I keep getting "almost" blue screens. They are blank grey screens, and I don't have a recovery disk.

Do you know of any programs that will free up space and not data? I have found tons of programs that will revcover data, but very few that recover actual hard drive space. I've already done the registry fix (If that's what you want to call it).

Again, thanks for your reply :)

    Hi Mattman,

Thank you for your reply. What you wrote is EXACTLY what I'm trying to do.:) Except, instead of burning anything to a disk or external hard drive, I'm uploading my important stuff to several online backup storage sites. I was doing that before my disk space got so low because when I get my new computer back, all I have to do is download them from those sites. See :D I'm not ALL that dumb lol

Now, I had to disable my CD-ROM and my Burning Drive because the computer wouldn't start up if they were enabled, therefore I can't make backups now. If I could just figure out what's causing the low disk space on drive C: error, then it would all be good.

I can't partition on such low level drive space, can I?

There's no reason to purchase anything. You cannot recover space that is in use. Nothing frees up space better than Delete>Empty recycle bin, or Add/Remove Programs>Remove.

You have to determine what data or programs you can do away with ..... we cannot see what is on your drive, nor know what is important to you.

I've told them over and over that it's been there since I bought it than it has been here to learn about Vista (which I hate). They keep changing their "refund policy" every time I talk to them. I asked one lady what is going to happen if it breaks down again (which it will, I can feel it), and she said that she's putting notes in there to give me a whole new system (an upgraded system).

That's not what I want and I told her that. I told every single person that I want a refund. Now, they gave me a name and address to write to a person about my problems with the computer and ask for a refund. He said that 99% of the time customers receive a refund.

Next time I'm going to either Dell or Lenovo - Stay away from Gateway (they used to be awesome, not anymore). I'm going to think it over about the news media, I keep wondering if they can get my money back?

    Thanks!

    Sin :)

Hi again Noah - Sorry I didn't see your post about this particular reply.

It does warrant a refund. The hard drive itself has gone out 4 times.

    1. The 1st time they sent it to me along with a recovery AND actual Windows Vista DVD. I called them, they helped me install the hard drive.
    2. As far as the DVD's go, I was supposed to be able to put them in the ROM Drive, hit the letter "R ", and voila! But, I never got a prompt for "R" (recovery), so after 3 hours of troubleshooting, they wanted me to send it in, so I did.
    3. When I got it back, I had it almost 2 weeks, and the hard drive just stopped working. I wasn't doing anything on it, but when I started, it started rebooting itself over and over. I couldn't get it to stop. (there went another 2-3 hours of support down the drain) They asked me to send it in, so I did.
    4. When I got it back this time, from the get go there were problems. The Internet was - I don't know how to put it - acting weird. It would take forever to open a folder. Then, here it went again, it just shut down and started rebooting itself over and over (I only had it back a week this time). Another 2 - 3 hours with tech support and they want it sent back in....so now it's still there. I haven't heard a word from them, and I keep calling and keep trying live chat with them. Nobody seems to know anything.

Let me point out that after the first time I sent it in, I was still under the warranty of getting a refund, but they didn't tell me that until I was free and clear of any type of warranty. (Yes, they witheld important information from me)

Here I sit wondering what it is about me and my computer that they won't give me a refund. All they have to do is tag it "refurbished" or "reconditioned ", correct?

Trust me, I've done all that. It only cleans up a few megs. I need ALOT of megabytes cleaned out. I've uninstalled anything that I don't need. I've done it all

Hi Rockstar - thank you for your reply, and I wish you would have posted that detailed reply, I NEED that :D Let me scroll up and try to answer all your questions :p

ADrive and 4Shared are storage sites, but that way I know my VIP docs are in a safe place (actually 3 safe places) and not on DVD's or CD's that might get lost or corrupt, etc.

    1. It's a desktop

    2. Gateway 540B - if I could post a link, I would and let you look at the specs. But if you go to Gateway, go to desktops, then GAMING computers, it should be there. Or you can type 540B in the search bar and it will bring it up.

    3. Hard Drive - I bought extra hard drives, so now it's up to - omg I can't remember. But I have one here that hasn't been installed yet. It can hold up to 800 GB. I designed it for gaming then using it for my office work (multi tasking) instead of going for a multi tasking computer and upgrading to a gaming computer.

    4. Not sure of my stored data type, I think it's 512MB w/ DDR2? RAM?

    5. My AV was Norton Internet Security and my Maleware was Malewarebytes

    6. Used both very frequently

    7. The history is on one of my replies and I have no idea what other pertinant info I could give because I never had it long enough to have anything important :D ;)

My font color lipstick is.........well, I can't tell you cuz it won't tell me  ;)

Can you please help? Anyone? If I could get a Hard Disk Drive Space Recovery program, then I think I could get at least 200MB back and then maybe partition my C drive. Any comments on partitioning? :)

    Sin

    Hi sinnimon,

I can understand your frustration, but we don't have enough info even now.

You say you have a 800 GB HDD. Is there only a single partition (C: ) or 2-3 partitions (D:,F: etc.) ?

What's the kind of data you are storing ? [512 MB DDR2 refers to your RAM & not to the type or amount data that you are trying to store].

Have you tried running Disk Cleanup ?

    Hi again Matt.

I guess I don't understand how I'm trying to fit too much data into "not enough space ". I'm trying to get more disk space, actually I'm trying to reclaim my old disk space. I was stupid for not ever creating backups of my data and I know that, oh yea, I know it.

What's the difference between a virtual hard drive, optical hard drive, and physical hard drive? When I search it, all that comes up are places that want to sell me the stuff :)

How can I reclaim the disk space that's cluttered on my hard drive? I can't do a disk defrag because it requires 10 or 15% to do that, and I don't have 10 or 15%

Can you see where my frustration comes in  lol :D

The 800 GB HDD is on my NEW computer that stays broken. This one is so old that I can't remember anything about it. But, I do know that there is a single partition, but I have a D drive that has all my drivers on it, and I "assume" it's for a partition?

The data storage question, I guess I don't understand what you are asking. I'm sorry, I feel so dumb :(

I run a cleanup everytime I exit Internet Explorer....it's a really old habit.

Again, thank you for replying :)

    Sin
