I would appreciate help with a sudden error when typing a word in search, as "regedit ". At click [Start]> type in [search program & file] regedit> ok.
Now fails to open the registry window. Only displays at start window "no items match your search ". Computer appears to be functioning satisfactory, except for this error, making the registry unobtainable for searches.

Thank you for reply. Any entries entered in the search, show the "no itemes match your item ". All recognised phrases by Windows entered, show same error. This error appeared only to day, the menu part is working ok.

Control Panel > Indexing Options - what are the included locations?

Is Window Search Service running ? ....

Task Manager > Services > Wsearch

    Change advanced indexing options

Checked out as mentioned. Task Manager> Services> Wsearch - Stop - N/A. How do you, please, start Wsearch? Thank you.

If it happened fairly recently try system restore.

In Task Manager > Services right click on Wsearch > Start Service.

This may not be enough so .....

    Orb > Run - type in Services.msc - Enter

In the Services window scroll down to Windows Search and double click on it.

In the window which opens check the start up type - Automatic (delayed start) - screenshot

If you do not have Run in the right hand column after clicking on the Orb go All Programs > Accessories > Run

PeteC many thanks for the most helpful detailed list. Ihave taken note for future help.
I did a run, and checked entries. Service status "Stopped ". Click start> Click start> could not start Windows in local or computer.> Error 206: file name or Extension to long. In Services startup, it shows [Automatic (Delayed start] or [Automatic] which applies? I am still left with a "white blank" window when entering any recognised word by Windows 7, in the [Search programs and files].

Since my previous entry, I made a further but later date Restore of my computer. Result was most favourable, as error was rectified. However, the computer clock for some reason required to be reset and Microsoft Security Essentials required to be updated, after which computer was restarted. Checking on the old error was indeed repaired, this proved not to be the case, as I am back to where I started.

Have a read of this ......

Windows 7 Start search menu displays empty result

System Restore will remove software installed since that restore point, hence the need to update MSE - I guess :)

As for the clock you restored to a point in time prior to the end of BST - I assume it was out by an hour. The computer should be set to automatically synchronise with internet time - that is the default setting and no doubt the next time Windows checked the time it would have corrected it.

I read the Windows7 start search menu and carried out one or two of the suggestions. In Start> Search programs, typed regedit, caption now shows an icon Control Panel. Clicking this icon shows, these files can not be openened. Clicking Control Panel icon on Desktop, displays contents and access as normal. I do have a way to access Regedit by using a longer method. However, this does not clear the error to allow normal access to files on the start search.

I have trawled the Internet for a solution and have come up with nothing beyond that which I have already posted. FWIW a screenshot of what you would expect to see is attached.

Bar suggesting a repair of Windows I suggest you lok at a 3rd part search engine such as AgentRansack - freeware. I have used the Pro version since XP and would not be without it. I never use Windows search.

Not a solution, but the best workaround I can offer.

It took several hours, decided to restore computer to a date February 2011, as this restore was a 100% reliable. It required one or two updates to be installed, but now error has been rectified. My thanks to all for giving me help and suggestions.
