I doubt I really have two versions of IE7 installed. But my add/remove programs shows Internet Explorer Beta 2 (size 3.99 Mb) and also Windows Internet Explorer 7 (at 4.80 Mb). I know to my cost that attempting to remove the beta only ends up crippling IE7 - and also removes some essential Windows XP files, so that attempting to reinstall IE7 can then show up some very nasty problems.

So what actually is going on here? And how can I safely remove the phantom reference?

It's not actually all that important, but it irks me...

It's a little late now, but you should have unistalled the Beta before installing the final version.

Come to think of it - I suppose I could always attempt to uninstall both 'products', then use Windows Install Cleanup tool if necessary, then run sfc /scannow, then attempt to reinstall ie7 - and if all that fails - sytem restore. Does that sound reasonable? And what, do you think, are the chances of it working?

Fairly good, but be sure to back up your data first - just in case :)

I would take this approach .....

Uninstall IE 7, then uninstall the beta. In theory (and practice) uninstalling IE 7 reverts the system back to IE 6. With both 7 and the 7 beta installed the outcome is not so clear and anything could happen :(

If IE 6 is restored just go ahead and reinstall IE 7 and if that fails to install follow the other steps you outlined.

Make a manual restore point before starting - incidently are you confident that System Restore functions as it should on your computer?

IMHO if all is working well I would let sleeping dogs lie - unless you like a challenge :D

If it ain't broke, I don't think I'd do anything....You could end up with a real mess on your hands.

    Hello oserdavid,

Personally never having had to do that, it does sound reasonable. After that, if you want to reinstall IE7, read through this article:
    http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/10/18/182724.aspx
Scroll down to Before installing IE7 and follow instructions exactly.

Too many dots in your link Charles - works fine if you remove two of them. But bloody hell Charles - this guy has scared the wits out of me! Just to think that in my ignorance I installed IE7 over the beta, with antivirus and ZoneAlarm running - and it all worked very well, miraculously, apparently!

I think, since everything is working well, apart from these two IE7 entries, I will take the advice kindly proffered by Pete and Steve - and let sleeping dogs lie... Until one day I'm in a real 'fiddling' mood...

By the way - I should have said my main browser is Firefox. IE7 is just used for Windows Updates and the occasional site that doesn't quite work as it should with Firefox.

    Best

Thanks David - the link as I posted works for me. Went back to the site and copied/pasted again.
    Given that, agreed.
