I have just noticed when cleaning my computer today I have the previous version of Firefox plus Firefox 2 in Add/Remove programs. My laptop updated fine as there is only v2 in Add/Remove but my desktop has both. I removed the old version but had to revert again as this seemed to remove Firefox completely although v2 was still showing in the Add/Remove panel.

I had made a restore point and didn't re-boot after I noticed my taskbar icon had been removed. I am back to having both versions showing in Add/Remove although when I launch FF it is v2 which launches. I am totally unsure what I should do as I don't want to mix things up completely.

When I used Add/Remove to uninstall what I thought was the old version the actual icon went and I was left with an icon for v2 but when I checked my All Programs Menu I did not have a folder for Mozilla.

My computer is back with both versions still installed and I would be grateful if anyone could advise on the correct procedure for fixing this.

I have been running v2 ever since the launch and only realised this when I compared the CP with my laptop. I don't want to corrupt FF completely which is why I am asking before I attempt anything tomorrow.

I have two folders in Program files
    1 Mozilla
    2 Mozilla Firefox

Both have the same amount of files in them I know it should only be Mozilla Firefox as this is what I have on my laptop.

I use Mr Tech with both computers the only difference with my desktop is I have scrapbook extension although I don't use this now but have left it until I copy the data I saved with it.

I would much prefer to have one version of Firefox as set on my laptop but don't know how to fix this without loosing everything :( I am using XP

Thanks for any advice (apologies for late post but I will check the forum tomorrow)

Mozilla is the Suite, like the old Netscape7.x, and earlier ones.
Now, I don't have Mozilla, but I have the more up-to-date Seamonkey, also a suite. By default, Mozilla and Seamonkey are installed in c:/Program Files|Mozilla, while Firefox is installed in Mozilla Firefox. If you chose to install them in another folder, it is a different story. The profiles, also, are in a different location. Application Data|Mozilla|Profiles for Mozilla or Seamonkey, and Application Data|Mozilla|Firefox|Profiles, for Firefox. Now, I, purposely hung on the older version, which is referred to as 1.5, in the Add/Remove, and installed v.2.0 in an entirely different folder, so I have a 2.0. Both are referred to as Mozilla Firefox. The size of the two folder is considerably different. In addition, I have Seamonkey1.0.6. Seamonkey has a profile with the .slt designation, like the old Mozilla and Netscape, and unlike Firefox
Which taskbar icon? If it is in the area next to the clock, it cannot be Firefox. Only Mozilla placed a Quick Launch icon. So, what versions do you have in the Add/Remove? Which folders do you have?

Thank you for your reply Westside

Apologies for the taskbar bit, I was tired last night and couldn't find the word I needed - Quicklaunch  it is the firefox icon there which disappeared when I tried to remove the older version.

I have never had anything other than Firefox as in suites only just the browser. In Add/Remove I have Mozilla Firefox 1.5 & Mozilla Firefox 2

Under my user name application data I have a folder Mozilla which opens to Firefox - Profile etc
I install all my programs to 'D' which is where I have a Mozilla + a Mozilla Firefox folder = 2 folders both seem to hold the same files .dlls etc

I have only ever used the actual browser from v1.5 and then I upgraded each time through the public releases of the betas until the final v2 was released. I didn't uninstall the browser at any stage just upgraded each time.
I really don't know if I should uninstall and try again in ored to have v2 only as I don't hold the older version for anything. I don't even know which order to uninstall or which folders to remove

    Thank you for your help

There was Quick Launch in Mozilla or NS7.x, but not in Firefox. So, I am sure what you are looking for.
If you have 1.5.0.8, you should be able to do an incremental upgrade. If you had an earlier version, you may be better off uninstalling everything, and then start from scratch. Note that a few extentions with worked in 1.5x, do not work in2.0, unless you use the Mr Tech Local Install extention.

I think I may be best with a fresh install. I am not using the computer at the moment as I am running Vista beta on a separate computer but will hopefully sort out Firefox tomorrow.

I have Firefox 2 installed with Vista and on my laptop both have a quick launch icon beside the one for IE.

If I am uninstalling the mixed up one do I remove v2 first and then the older 1.5 (I didn't have a really old one as I only started to use Firefox over the last 6 mths if even that long ago) or do I just remove the old 1.xx and leave 2 but install a fresh one removing the old folder for Firefox

I am only using a few extensions one being No Script plus Mr Tech I don't mind loosing scrapbok as I use Faststone now for screen captures. The one which didn't work was bookmark backup but I removed this.

    1. If I back up my profile in Application data folder do I just copy this over to the new folder when Firefox 2 is installed fresh?
    2. Another worry when I do uninstall both versions or just the old one do I manually delete the program folders in All Programs list?
I feel really stupid about this but I really would prefer to complete this correctly as I am quite fussy about the uninstalls/installs I do on my main PC  I would like to maintain the settings I have now as plus bookmarks etc

Just to update my original post I have just completed a freh install of Firefox.
Thanks for your help Westside a fresh install was best even though I am setting things up again. I feel happier now I only have the one version in Add/Remove just to complete a few things and hopefully feel I have my own version back again soon. Thankfully I don't use a lot of addons :) at least I have a clean install now.

It has been a weird experience, and, I was going to give up, being at a loss.
In my case, I have both 1.5.0.8, and 2.0, installed. Just yesterday, I put 1.5.0.8 as my default browser. No fault of 2.0, but since addons go to pot with every version, and, the developer is not always hurrying in updating them, it can be a nuisance, though often minor. I have no idea what the developers of Roboform are doing, but their file is not compatible, yet. I can use Roboform in 2.0, thanks to MrTech Local Install, but I am intercepted every time that I click on a link. It is a minor nuisance, but after it happens a dozen times in a day, you want to have something more compatible.

I was wondering why you have so many different versions (FF, Seamonkey) installed on your computer.
    Now I know! Good idea.
Enjoying reading your posts. You and Romana have saved my butt more than once. ;)

I, actually, have a third version of Firefox, and three versions of Seamonkey. They coexist peacefully, and, of course, they give me clues about potential problem, past and future. But, I draw a line in carrying a bunch of browsers. No more NS4.x or 7.x, and I, barely, tolerate NS8.1.2.

    Westside,

I was told that in order to install FF 2.0.1 along with FF 1.5.0.9, I had to do something special. I am still waiting to hear instructions about what to do. You seem to have FF 1.5 and 2.0 installed separately with no conflict or problems. Is it as simple as installing 2.0.1 to a different folder than the default folder in order to use them both? I could use instructions, if possible.

I have also Firefox3.0apre. Each browser is installed in a separate folder, and, most important, to avoid constant confusion, I have created three different profiles for the three browsers. If I use different profiles(which can be copies of each other) there is no conflict. As to how I did that, I select the folder by doing a Custom installation..
As for extentions (addons), I use the MrTech Local Install extention (thank you Jim) to get compatibility. Not all extentions can be made compatible.

I do not use extensions at all. Maybe when I learn a bit more about them.

    Your help is appreciated.
