I am looking for a new laptop. So far, I have avoided buying a touchscreen laptop, thinking that I would be better off buying a laptop that put all of its resources into hardware capabilities I am interested in using, than in touchscreen, that I don't want.

I have noticed some touchscreens that are as cheap as other laptops I'm looking at. So I have two questions dealing with touchscreens:

    (1) Do they typically have low quality screens, designed for repelling fingerprints and foodstains, but poorer for viewing videos?
    (2) If I were to buy a touchscreen laptop and disable the touchscreen functionality, would it still absorb system resources (assuming that it does take up some system resources like RAM & cpu cycles, to maintain touchscreen functionality)?

    Hi Paul.

No. In the many laptops that I have bought for clients, the touchscreens that the laptops have now are just fine for watching videos and opening up applications to view.

No it won't. The device driver for the touch screen would still be enabled but the touchscreen functionality would not take up any significant amount of resources that you would notice. You would be much better off optimizing the new laptop to get it running faster by following the instructions in my guide instead of worrying about the touch screen taking up resources.

You can disable the touchscreen functionality if you really want to but I would focus on removing any junk programs on the system first.

What is your budget for a new laptop?

$700. I'm returning the one I just got, and I really want to stick to that---my total including shipping was 705. I suppose I could hit 725 out the door, but that's pretty much it. I can go lower than this and upgrade RAM on my own if I need to.

This one looks like a great deal, HP Pavilion 15z Touch 15.6” Laptop in Natural Silver (AMD A8-7410 Quad-Core, Radeon R5 Graphics, Windows 10 Home, HD Touchscreen Display, Backlit Keyboard, 256GB Eluktro Pro Performance SSD, 8GB RAM).

The other two laptops, have a better processor, but they have a crappy 5400 RPM hard drive which will hurt performance big time. I would avoid 5400 RPM drives in laptops as they can definitely hurt your Windows experience.

You could consider buying this laptop and upgrading the hard drive to a 7200 RPM hard drive or an SSD which would trump the laptop that I recommended on Newegg. However if you don't want to upgrade the hard drive then the one from Newegg would be a good deal.

No can do. If I go HP, it has to be a 17 inch, which they still sell with batteries that detach, and RAM that is easy to access. I've called them, and their 15 inches are not designed to be upgradeable by non-pros like me. :(

Also, a 256 gb hard drive would be pushing it. I have in two partitions, 55 gigs in the C partition and 65 gigs in the files partition, used up. I suppose I could partition it 100-150 gigs or thereabouts. Actually, that doesn't sound bad. I would plan on keeping this laptop for 4-6 years, and I don't suppose I'd go from 65 gigs of data to 150 in that amount of time.

Ok, so are you open to upgrading the hard drive in the Lenovo laptop to an SSD or do you want the laptop to have the hardware already upgraded to decent enough specs?

*Sigh* never mind. Its a bear, to get at the battery and RAM.

Shopping for a new laptop is fun for the first 30 minutes. Then it gets old.

At this point, I've been surfing with a 5400 hdd for the last 3 weeks and honestly this thing is fast enough for me. I sure would not want to pay another 300 to get a faster hdd.

OK this is an SSD that I can afford--it has 256 gigs.

This would be easier for me than to purchase a second hdd and then install it. That would mean my original laptop would have cheaper parts.

I believe this is a quad core chip (AMD doens't have those helpful info pages like Intel does---at least they don't show up in searches), 8 gigs of RAM.

The laptop I linked to here is only 630 when I opt for Windows 10 home.

SO I guess this becomes our new baseline, to beat---the dell I linked to in the post above.

Please comment: that AMD chip isn't the best, but the combination of that chip, with 8 gigs of RAM and the SSD would still give me the fastest computer of all the ones linked to here, would it not?

EDIT: I jsut saw that it is an integrated battery. OK I thought all dells had the batteries that were easily removable. Then this is off the table.

I did look at all teh Dells with 256 gigs (I just think 128 is too small, that would pretty much put me at 80-90% of the disk size by copying over my current OS, programs, and data files), and the cheapest one is $750. I want to stay at or below 725, 705 really was my target. I'm willing to go with an SSD if it is 705 or less, 256 gigs or more, plus I can add RAM later on and take out the battery.

Wow. Just looked at SSD prices on newegg.

Big question is if I can find one that would fit a laptop, but 500 gig SSDs are going for 100 bucks. THat is very doable.

Is there an online resource that can determine which SSD will fit which laptop? my newegg search from 258-512 gig SSDs gave me 528 results.

Sorry but I have to change my mind. At this point i'm just too busy to upgrade the hard drive. And I need it very soon, much sooner than I'll be able to spend the hours I'd need to make the switch. I need to use the laptop as is. Even if it means 5400 rpm.

I went ahead and clicked on the link, intending to buy that laptop from Newegg.

But then I changed my mind again.

I upgraded it to a 512 gig SSD, for only 50 bucks extra I couldn't resist.

SO my out the door was about 100 more than I wanted, but now I have a hdd that is big enough and fast enough for me.

OK thanks for hanging in there with me. Appreciate it.

Now upgrading to Windows 10 won't be a problem, correct? It says

Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit via Windows 8.1 Pro downgrade rights

If I have a choice when I first boot up, should I opt for 8.1? WOuld that make it an easier upgrade to W10?

No, you can upgrade to Windows 10 directly from Windows 7 if you want to.
