    Network Resources

    Hi,
    if i understand it correctly,
Read "prioritizing use of network resources" in Help of Windows , are u saying taht u are able to use only one network card instead of two ?! you have to set priority for your network card when to use which one.

    :)

cdg52 - it would really help to know what you want to accomplish. Are you trying to set the PC up as a router on your network?

    What I want

At my place I have two networks, and they both have independent Internet. One is very high speed, which we shall call "Network A" the other is slow and is used for the VOIP and basic computing no downloading, it also has a printer attached to that network so lets say thats "Network B ", I have my workstation which is I need to plug into both networks, I have two network cards and they both run fine together but my issue is no matter what Network B becomes the dominate network even if i trade out the network cables, It always defaults my Internet to the slower connection, I want to make it so Network B allows me to file share within my network and print, yet it doesn't allow the Internet to come through. If it needs anymore description just let me know I can try again to explain what I want.

Thanks. I think I have the idea now.

    - remove the gateway address from the Network B NIC. That way it won't be able to find the internet.

    - right-click My Network Places icon then click properties. When the window opens, click on Advanced then on Advanced Settings.

    - move the card for Network A to the top. See the picture below where I have a 4 NIC server (don't ask  ) with the NIC order set as I need it.

I think thats only for 2000, unless your using XP because I cant find that setting anywhere, and its now called Network Connections.

The desktop icon that was called Network Neighborhood in earlier versions through NT4 I think is now called My Network Places.

The control panel version of the same thing is called Network Connections as you stated but if you open that, you will see exactly the same information. The picture below is from the XP-pro system I'm on now. The previous one, as you noted, is from a 2K box because that was the only multi-homed system I had available to show details with multiple NICs.

Alright Now that I have network B to top you said to remove my gateway, only issue is that I use DHCP for asigning IP's and that such so I cant exactly remove it. Also do you know what the binding settings are with connections? I think that might be something I am looking for.

Both connections have different routers which is giving out the signal.

You can set your PCs non-internet network card to use a static address and leave the gateway address blank. Just pick an address (both IP and subnet mask) that is in the same range as the segment of your network it connect to. Unless your network is pretty well loaded there will be addresses above the highest ones the DHCP server ever assigns so it won't cause any conflict. Also, any DHCP server I've ever heard of allows you to set a 'scope' or range of addresses the DHCP server will use so you could limit it and make sure the one you picked was one the DHCP server was not allowed to assign.

Yes I know about bindings and no, they should not have any effect on what you are doing here unless your network is set up in some sort of non-standard fashion. The topic is a little complex and while I'd be happy to explain some of it, I don't think I need to do that much typing and probably you don't want to do that much reading.

If you do, try Here and Here for quick how-to articles on briefly what it is and how to change things. For more in-depth information, try Here

I have about what I want, I think I have to reboot for these to take effect of changing the line up, but once thats done which who knows how many days It should all work, and the thing with the DHCP, id rather use it then do it by hand, sure its easy but Its just easier for me. So thanks for all the help, I'll get back to you all if I ever reboot soon.
