Before I start poking around with this, I thought I'd ask in this group.

My primary (server) box is on 24-7.

Existing fax/data modem (3com) is hooked to a dedicated fax / private voice
    line.

I have a voice / fax / data modem. Actually have two of these ... came in
our twin HP Pavillion 8275's ... biggest chip says ...

    Lucent
    1643
    F48PCH 12
( then an 'Industry Canada' sticker obscures what may be ... )
    9747S 174940
( the 'Industry Canada' sticker says ... )
    1636 7605 A

Top corner of the board says ...

    DS560-450 REV. B
    © 1996 DIGITAN SYSTEMS
    S/N: (then a sticker says ... ) F/D 0899902
(then the board again says ... )
    REV
    B-5

The board is a bit unusual ( to me, at least ), as it has a wire from (the
motherboard, if I recall) that plugs in to the modem board ... 4 connections
on the board, but it seems to me there were only two conductor on the cable
... won't get inside for a few days (Monday?)

Can I install that modem in the server, hook it up to the primary voice
(business) line, with the goal of creating an answering machine / voice mail
system in that same box which stays on all the time ?

Any advice or warnings / web site info much appreciated

I once had a machine with four modems, all doing separate functions on separate phone lines. The trick is in getting two or more modems to perform their functions at the same instant. Example: Receive a voice call and record an incoming message on one line while receiving a fax on another. This simultaneous performance seems to be more a function of the board than the modems.

My setup was done years ago when all modems were hardware set and predates the PCI bus. I would think that with all the improvements, it should be easier to get them to work simultaneously with the newer equipment.
