I happened to be looking thru C>Program Files (XP/SP2), and noticed two folders: Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Firefox (2). The first is about 28MB, the second (all entries dated 4/23/09) about 9MB. Many files in both folders have the same name. Is folder MF2 an update, a duplicate, a remnant from an uninstall, or what? (it doesn't specifically appear in Add/Remove). Thnx

I don't know why you may have two folders with, apparently, the same files (mostly). Do you see a firefox.exe in both? If so, right click|properties would tell you if you have two different versions. My Firefox is 29.2 MB, and I have ,on purpose two copies of 3.5.3, installed in different locations, and I use them with different profiles. In addition, I have version 3.0.14.
To me, the (2) folder seems to be an incomplete whatever, delete it, and see what happens. Can you list any file/folder which is not found in the smaller folder?

West...MF2 has no firefox.exe. It does have chrome, extensions, searchplugins(2), components, defaults(2), license, freebl3.chk...total of 16 files and folders. They're not always identical....searchplugins(2) is the same as searchplugins, but defaults(2) has less files than defaults. Oddly, the install.log is the same for both, and refers to version 3.0.10 (June of this year). I'm very tempted to put MF2 in the recycle bin to see what happens. Even if FF grinds to a halt, shouldn't Windows be OK?

Don't worry, Windows will be ok. As you describe the contents of this phantom suggest an incomplete installation. In any event v.3.0.10 is sorely outdated. I would uninstall Firefox, after having downloaded the most current 3.0.x version, i.e. 3.0.14. Then install the updated version. Otherwise, there is a v.3.5.3. But, clean up the present mess, and use a current browser.
A remnant from an uninstall would havea plugin (not searchplugin) and components folder, and little else.

West...I'm using 3.5.3, that's why I found the install log for 3.0.10 very strange. I'll let you know what happens.
