After making some changes in moving thiungs around ( repositioning the router and perhaps connecting to a different port or something ? ) I get a message appearing on my lap-top (Vista) that two computers on this network have the same IP address. The other seems likely to be my wife's laptop (XP) rather than my PC (Windows7) in view of the timing of that message in relation to which machines were switched on at the time.
How can I change the IP address, or better , perhaps check what it is on each of the three machines on the network ,first of all ?

Probably best asked in the networking forum, in the mean time either set up each (and every) system to obtain an IP address automatically (from the router) or give them individual IP addresses.

Are you sure you have not made any changes in router and/or computers besides repositioning it ?

I am sure ; the changes I made were 2;-
    1) my e-mail system kept asking foir a password, and I played about with other e-mail systems - briefly , and tried adding a new account with the known right passowrd etc ; evntgually solved this by going back to ISP and resetting password there . Still the same password, but end of problems.
    2) I moved the router to a higher position to get a better signal (wireless) in other rooms.

Can'r see that these could have caused the problem.

    Shut down all computers.
Turn on one, wait until completely booted and an IP address is assigned.
    Repeat for other comps.

You likely didn't shut down the comps when rearranging things, you maybe just unplugged cables. And the router assigned an address that it thought was free.

Start the comps one at a time.

You can also try running ipconfig /renew on each of the PCs. That will force them to renegotiate their IP addresses with the router.
