Downloaded and installed Tweakui for XP. Before doing so, uninstalled old Powertoys, and old Tweakui, and removed it from Control Panel. New Tweakui now resides in Program Files|Accessories.

Problem: At boot-up I'm continually getting the message: "Error loading Tweakui.cpl. The specified module could not be found. "

How do I get rid of this annoyance?

Tweakui for XP should be in Start>All Programs> Power Toys for XP. I would un-install and reinstall and watch where the installer says it is putting your program.

    Put Tweakui.cpl here:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load

    Abraxas:

It was in Control Panel | Don't load. I toggled it on, then toggled it off, both with the same result--the error message still showed up.

So, then I just got rid of it all together, including the don't load, but it still shows up.

    Now what?

See if Tweakui is listed in that same cloumn as "don't load ". Delete it if there.

I suppose it is worth using TweakUI against itself---run it and uncheck TweakUI from the list of Control Panel applets to display, if there.

Try running a reg cleaner that removes unused application paths.

    "Don't load" no longer exists.

Tweakui does not list itself among the Conrol Panel extentions.

Nor does Tweakui.cpl show up on a search.

    OK. This is getting frustrating!

    How about here?

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Cpls

    Nope, it ain't there.

The only place in Registry that I've found any Tweakui string is in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

and that string was "C:\Windows\System32\Tweakui.exe,3 "

OK. Let's go back a little. Do you happen to know what version of TweakUI the old one was?

And, after uninstalling, you mention "removed it from Control Panel ". What exactly did you do to remove it?

Try installing Startup Control Panel. Look at the Startup applet it puts in the Control Panel to see if anything looks promising:
    http://www.mlin.net/files/StartupCPL.zip

For a complete list of startups and their locations, try StartupList:
    http://www.wilders.org/HTMLobj-1576/startuplist.zip

If you don't see anything helpful there, post the whole thing in case someone can see somthing.

Solved the problem--the error message no longer appears!

Deleted every instance of Tweakui from my hard drive, including the registry.

I really don't need it at this time, since I have already made all the tweaks I felt necessary.

    Thanks anyway for the help.
