    Hi Folks, first time caller.............

Quick one, have had an epson scanner (model 3490) for 8 months, worked well til now.

Today, can't start the scanner as this message appears on my desktop once I have clicked onto the 'Epson Scan' icon :-

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

Once I have clicked 'OK' in that box - then a smaller box appears with the wording:-

    Cannot find necessary files.
    Please re-install the software

I have tried all day to uninstall the Epson program, rebooted with the CD rom many times, have telephoned the Epson helpdesk, have signed up to 'Mighty Max' to clean the pc system, phoned Microsoft etc etc etc....

All to no avail, hope someone out there has either negotiated their way through such an obstacle or just has the knowledge to help me out!

    Thanks for looking.

    Dave.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,
[Aside: You have a double post in the Windows XP forum
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=61883
please don't double post, having two threads running on the same subject is confusing. If you would like to try another forum, post a reply and request that it be moved (it will still show in the original forum anyway, the threads will be linked).]

    A solution found here:
    http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php?Number=290951&page=0
Complete removal of software/drivers and installing an update.

My best suggestion, boot into safe mode, look through Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything related to Epson (including any other hardware like printers...old printers(?)). Go to Device Manager and remove any Epson hardware there. Boot into normal mode. Install the drivers/software that are offered for your model at the Epson website.

Still no luck, do the above procedure. Open the registry editor. Create a backup of the registry (and say, make a Restore point). Do a search of the registry for the word Epson, delete the keys. Reboot and try installing the updated software/drivers again.

Disconnect the scanner until you run the installation program, follow the instructions carefully (if you leave it connected, Windows will probably just detect it and reinstall the old drivers so you will be back to square one).

    How to reinstall scanner software
