I did a search for Tune Up software as I thought my computer needed some form of tune up. I have windows xp and while it has been doing fairly well since 2004 I ended up downloading a program covered in PC world and Cnet called TuneUp Utilities which has a 30 day trial. It does the usual scanning etc. How useful are these programs and are there any that are much better than others?

Best left alone in my opinion. defrag regularly, uninstall unwanted/no longer required programs and general housekeeping. You'll have a better understanding of your computer without the problems this type of software introduces.

    EDIT: Almost forgot BACKUP :D

What about lots of errors in registry that are fixed?

Registry errors would barely hamper your computer. Best left alone unless you really know what you're doing and even then best done by hand not by using an automated (often very dumb) process.

Everything you say is true. But I have always had very good luck with CCleaner. Both for cleaning out temp files and such and left over Registry bits. Or have you heard of problems with this program?

It's usually lack of knowledge by the users Grump. Personally I wouldn't recommend registry cleaners to anyone unless (as I already said) they know exactly what they're doing. ;)
