For some reason, I can't seem to make my default browser (of choice) Firefox to stay set on my laptop! I set the default to Firefox, but every time I turn my laptop back on (after shutting it off for the night) it reverts back to Microsoft Edge!
My laptop is a HP2000 running Windows 10 (and yes, this is the same laptop that I've had other issues with, but can live with those). But this one is somewhat annoying!
I've tried to do a google search and thought I'd tried everything, but nothing seems to help! Anyone have any idea as to why the setting doesn't "stick"?

Microsoft Edge offers a lot of new features and functionality. You can follow the steps below to disable Edge:

    1. Type settings on the search bar.
    2. Click System.
    3. On the left pane, choose Default apps and select choose Set defaults by app.
    4. Choose your browser and make sure to select Set this program as default.

That's the process I use every time I start my laptop! It just won't stay set as the default!

Try > Start > Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Web Browser > (should open a Menu showing browsers available) > click on Firefox > Close Settings > Restart your laptop to allow Windows to make the change. (this is important).
Let's know if it "sticks" Vicki.;)

    Also:
Firefox > Tools Menu > Options > General > Always check if FF is your default browser.

Vicki, please explain a bit more about when this occurred.
Had you recently received an MS update?
Was it working previously and for how long?
Did you have an update from Mozilla?

Unfortunately, I have a very short memory and don't recall when this started happening. I believe I'm receiving (and have installed) all the updates that are current. I can live with this, just change my default to Firefox every time I use my laptop, but just seems odd that nothing I do will make that change stay. Thanks for taking the time to looking at this issue though.

Sorry we were unable to help as MS have made Edge a really good browser (finally) and they have removed the easy ways to remove/disable it.
My final suggestion would be to run sfc /scannow
Right click Start > Windows Powershell (Admin) > sfc /scannow > entrer. (note space between sfc and forward slash)
This will check the System Files are correct.

Guys, my Post #4 is the way I have set my Browser and it works every time.
If Vicki is following that procedure exactly and it's not working for her - she has a bug or corruption causing her problem.
My Post #9 was to try and see if her Files are in order as an elimination process.
She may need to do a Fresh copy of W10 if there is a major corruption.

Sorry for my absence, life got in the way. ;) I did do the sfc/ scannow as instructed, but there were no errors and nothing to correct. Odd that this browser selection just won't stay set. It's more of a minor inconvenience (and just one of those challenges I sometimes like to figure out--with help of course! :)) If I don't remember to change my settings (start>default apps) to Firefox when I first fire up my laptop, I'm prompted to do so when I open Firefox (which will direct me to those settings).
This laptop came with Win8 installed, I "upgraded" to the free Win10 when it was offered (whenever that was!lol) But I certainly appreciate the offers of help given to me!

One more thought Vicki, you haven't by any chance clicked on the RESET button when using DEFAULT APPS process??

Vicki, have a look at this link: https://www.guidingtech.com/fix-microsoft-edge-opening-windows-mac/
I note you have W10 Home 64bit. (You do not have access to gpedit.msc)
Scroll down the page until you reach the suggestion for W10 Home Edition users.
Have a read and see if this might be the way to alleviate your Startup problem.

Thanks everyone for trying to help. I did check out that link that you suggested retiredlearner, but seems I had every thing that was recommended already done. This issue will just be added to the list of my other minor annoyances and I can live with it. Just thought I'd give it a try in case I missed something. I'm sure I'll be back one day with yet another question for you all! :)

*Update* Decided to try "drastic" measures.....I re-installed/repaired Windows 10! (chose to keep my files, etc.) Not sure which "version" I had before, as I never even thought to check that, but currently it shows as Window 10 Home, Version 2004, OS build 10941.867 So far, so good....my browser (Firefox) now stays set to default! So now I question if one of the updates that may have occurred was the culprit? If so,, I fear that the next "update" will bring me back to the same issue! But I know in order to keep my laptop safe, I should allow the updates.
Thanks to all on this board....I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate all the help I've been given!

Hi Vicki, You may get notified of an Update as the Version I have is:
    Windows !0 Pro
    Version 20H2
    Installed 7/06/2020
    OS Build 19042-867.
You are running Home but you should still get the 20H2 update.
As you can see from the install date on my comp, I have been 100% OK right through.
The biggest hassle may be MS trying to get you to use Edge.;)
You know how to make your Browser choice the Default - so go for it.:)
