I am trying to create a dual boot W7 Home Premium 64bit & XPP 32bit. Win 7 was upgraded from Vista Home Premium via a Sony supplied upgrade disk on a Vaio.

I shrank the Win 7 partition but when I try to install XPP I am gettting a 0x7B error when it is first loading the install files.

MS suggests a boot virus but a scan reveals nothing. Any possible thoughts on why this might be happening?

    Thanks

    Good News - Bad News

The bad news is - the best way to do this is install XP first.

The Good News is that if you GOOGLE - Dual Boot Vista or Win 7 and XP you'll find some really long nasty looking instructions. You can find the instruction here too...

I had a feeling you were going to tell me that.... :-(

Only issue is, if the computer is having issues loading the install files, would I have to reformat the HDD so that it is clean and then start with XP?

    Thanks

XP and Win7 use entirely different boot loaders....And with Win7's being the newer of the two - it needs to do its thing...

Have you look into the XP mode deal?

I thought XP Mode wasn't available for Home Premium

The problem I think I might run into is if I wipe the HDD and install XP, create a partition for 7 and then try to install from the upgrade disk to the empty partition, W7 won't install because it doesn't see a qualifying OS or it won't activate if it does install

That's what I did - I shrank the volume in W7, created the new space and then popped in the XP CD. It BSOD's as it is loading the install files. I never get to choose where to install it.

    - 2004 SP1 won't install - unsupported OS

    - yes

I go back to my concern - I think I might run into a problem if I wipe the HDD and install XP, create a partition for 7 and then try to install from the upgrade disk to the empty partition. If W7 won't install because it doesn't see a qualifying OS or it won't activate if it does install

    Thanks

    Update
Sony's upgrade disk is not bootable so I downloaded the 64bit ISO file from MS and install the base W7 install. I then had to load the proper installer file for the 32bit XP install and all went fine from there.

If anyone else runs into this issue let em know and I can steer you straight

    Thanks for input Steve
