    Hello again!

To be absolutely blunt - I am ****** off! I have upgraded to W.7 from XP. I have "received" windows media player 12 as part of the package. It refuses to operate as I would wish with regard to copying and burning and I have spoilt 2 expensive (Lightscribe) discs and one inexpensive one trying to burn a playlist to them. I decided to delete WMP 12 and re-install WMP 11, with which I am familiar, and lo and behold, I am not allowed to 'operate' my own computer because a programme called 'trusted installer' has to give me "permission" to do so. What is this? a "big brother" programme called W 7? What the **** is microsoft playing at? I am definitely 'un-chuffed'. Will someone please show me how to get rid of this administrative programme "Trusted Installer" and give me back my computer which, as the owner and administrator, I can download, upload, and delete whatever and whenever I wish to. (I nearly re-installed my XP Prof +SP3 in my anger!!)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Trusted Installer is a service (Windows Modules Installer), which handles Windows updates and optional components. If it is disabled, installations/uninstallations may not work.

Unfortunately, what I know about playlists can be written on the back of a postage stamp, however I’m guessing you probably need to take ownership of the folder/file you are trying to burn.

To do so, right-click the folder, select Properties > Security Tab > Advanced at the bottom > Owner Tab > Edit > Highlight your username and put a tick in ‘Replace owner on subcontainers…’ and Apply > OK. You will only have the ‘Replace owner on subcontainers…’ box for folders not files. Click Yes when you receive the Security pop-up window then click OK to the Close/Reopen message. Make a note of the previous owner in case you want to change it back.

Now go back to the Properties > Security Tab. Click Edit > Add. Type in your User Account Name in the box under Enter the objects name to select. Click on Check Names > OK. Click on your User Account Name to highlight it. Check the box for Full Control > Apply and OK etc.

    BurrWalnut,

OK, Thank you, I understand your words, but does this mean that every time I want to burn/copy/rip, I have to go through this prolonged routine? It is ridiculous. I am having to get "permission" for every silly little operation that was a straightforward operation with XP. Why can I not operate my own computer? This really is NOT the way forward for microsoft. (Re-installation of XP gets nearer and nearer )
    Still despondent

I’m wondering if it’s the UAC prompts rather than the Trusted Installer you need to change.

With UAC turned on you may be asked if you want to allow a program to run. If it’s a legitimate program, just continue.

To turn UAC off or on, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > User Accounts > Change UAC settings and move the slider down/up. To turn it off completely, move it to the bottom and restart the computer.

To change the way Action Center notifies you, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Action Center > Change Action Center settings in the left pane. The settings apply to Updates, Internet, Firewall, UAC and Malware.

    OK, BurrWalmut,
But before I start to change UAC items etc, would the instructioin 'permission required from trusted Installer' appear if it was not the T.I ? I ask because I don't get asked if I want the programme to run, I get told that I need permission to do it. (burn a play list etc)

No, it wouldn’t, when you first mentioned the Trusted Installer, my initial thought was a permissions issue. UAC asks if a program can run or not.

It may be obvious, but do you have an administrators account?

    Thanks, again, BurrWalnut,

I already downloaded the Right Click menu option and use it for most chances - but it doesnt work in this case. The files are already in my music files. Or they were. When I got rid of the WMP 12, and replaced it with the WMP 11, half my music files were 'lost'. I restored the files that I had deleted amd they restored as the same name with (2) beside them, so I can delete them again if they mess anything up. But I'm quite upset at loosing so much that took so long to amass.

Sorry, but I don’t think there is much more I can offer. My problem is knowing next to nothing about WMP, music and the like. My expertise finished after burning my favourite music to CD using Win98 and Adaptec (Roxio) software.

Have you considered using other music player/burner software as an experiment on one or two tracks to a cheap CD?

    BurrWalnut,

    Thank you for your post.

The strangest thing has happened. I followed instructions to delete files by taking ownership and then deleting them. Then I opened the download programme for WMP 11. It then ¡nstalled and operated correctly. The problem was that now, half of the music that I had ripped and kept as 'My Music' disappeared with it! As you know, I came back to the forum and 'moaned' about it.
I then restored the deleted files from my recycle bin and, as I already mentioned, they restored with the same name with the addition of a "2" beside the file name.
I have just opened my WMP 11, to take stock of what was missing and, surprise surprise, all the missing files are back again.
I am pleased, but completely mystified. I thought that WMP was just a programme that, when installed, found the music files and arranged them and played them - or whatever option was available. But I thought that the files remained on the hard drive per se, and had nothing to do with the WMP programme or wmp files that I deleted.
So, all is now 'sorted' and I am once again a 'happy bunny'! I have got rid of the uncooperative WMP 12. Downloaded and Installed WMP 11 again, have all my music in my computer, learned a lot about 'taking ownership' and apart from the time factor all it has cost me is time - and being retired and well past my sell-by date, that is no 'big deal'!

My thanks to all who have offered advice and help.

I shall mark this as "Resolved "
