I would like to use True Image 10 with Vista but I had a bad experience with TI 8.0 on my XP and need help from some of the experts here.

When I tried to restore an image created with TI 8.0 on my desktop, I could not. Kept getting error and had to give up. This is a few years back but the memory stayed with me. TI 8.0 apparently could not acces the 0 partition (restore partition) on the desktop.

I have just restored from the new laptop's 0 partition following Acer's instructions. Before installing any MS updates, which caused me to need the restore, I need to create an image that I can restore from now that I have my programs and settings A-OK.

Can I use TI 10 on a computer that has a hidden restore partition? Also can this program be run from within windows or is there another way to run it?

With Ghost on my XP, I have it run in DOS from a CD.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi Ann,

TI 10 works well with Vista, I have tried it twice on different machines just to see. I think that your problem maybe that Partition 0 is just what you say, 'Hidden', so that TI can't access it. If you prefer back-up images, why do you keep the restore partition? It just takes up disk space and includes all the extras added to the OS by Acer, so why not delete it and rely on your TI image which is just the Vista OS as you set it up?
For TI I would advise that you validate each image after making it just to be sure. If the active partition, usually 'C' is involved in any changes, TI can be started from within Vista, but the machine will re-boot, do any necessary changes, and then re-boot into Vista.

    Hi Roger,

Thanks for your reply. I don't dare delete the hidden partition: I don't know how and it is the only Vista OS that I have. I do not have a CD with the OS, so I have to keep the Restore partition, don't I.

I always follow your procedure when I use Ghost to make an image.
Re: TI, is there any trick to getting it to make an image of C:\ and having it ignore the hidden partition? If not I am stuck until something else comes along for Vista. My DOS Ghost works just fine on my XP even with the hidden partition on that computer. :(

    Hi Ann,

I am sure that if you tell TI to only image the 'C' partition it will do it for you, but just a tip, if you have to restore that image for some reason, make sure that you make it the 'Active' partition so that the OS will boot OK.

    Hi Roger,

Thank you for your suggestions which I am printing out for reference.

When I use TI do I need to turn off System Restore?

I tried installing last night using Total Uninstall to monitor the installation and got a "Windows Installer Stopped Working error," twice. Any suggestions?

If I got an image done then I could get on with the Vista updates once again to see if I can finally get it updated.

    Hi Ann,

I would try installing TI without the use of Total Uninstall if I were you, as TI has its own uninstaller facility, and I know that TI can be fussy about what is running when you try to install.
    Try this:
Shut down any anti-virus or registry protection you have running.
If you are loading TI from the CD, right click on the 'Install' command and choose 'Run as administrator'.
On the TI splash screen right click on the 'Install' button, and select 'Install' from the menu which appears.

System Restore should not have any effect on TI's installation.

I hope that works, but if not there is a command line procedure for installing which may work.

    Roger;)
