my families old computer just crashed and i had to format the HDD and reinstall windows... I got this Windows 98 SE disc from a friend, and after the install, I'm having trouble getting connected to the internet. I go through a cable provider...

but the problem is, every time i try to open up internet explorer it tries to get me to sign up for MSN internet access... i found out that when i open up IE its running a program called msoobe.exe that came with windows... how do i get rid of this, and go through IE to get on the net?

    anti telephone,

    Try this route ....

Programs > Accessories > Communications > Dial Up Networking and set up a new connection based on your cable connection data.

I'm not familiar with cable - use broadband, but that approach should work.

    Alternatively call the cable company.

when i do that, it opens up this dialog that searches for the modem... and its a cable modem that is only connected through a NIC... its searching for something like a 56k, so it doesnt find anything... its trying to install drivers for it... also my cable company is run by bastards and they dont know anything and wont even try to help in situations like this.

how many people out there have windows 98 SE? this has to be something that more than one person has encountered

besides... i know how to set up my computer for a cable connection... what i am trying to do is get rid of that SIGN UP FOR MSN INTERNET ACCESS thing that comes up every time i try to open internet explorer, or the internet connection wizard

it completely prevents me from opening IE and its annoying... i tried renaming that msoobe.exe program so it wont find it, but when i do that and try to open up IE it just doesnt do anything at all... also i installed the newest version of IE

Go ahead and step through that wizard. It should, at some point early on if I remember correctly, give you the option to "set my connection up manually" or "I already have an account" or something similar. It's been a while since I've encountered that annoying wizard but I remember it well.

Pete - cable is broadband too. Probably more common in the US than DSL too but for the user, mostly a difference of who they pay for the service.

DSL = Digital Subscriber Line phone service and internet shares the line with voice phone.

Cable = cable television service and internet shares the cable with your television signal.

Thanks for the explanation, Newt - we don't have cable around here, at least not on my estate and our local telephone exchange has only recently been ADSL enabled.

Pete - I had sorta gathered from various UK-poster's comments that you folks were mostly using either DSL or satellite for high speed.

Cable TV is so pervasive over here that most folks just opt to add broadband to their other cable services. We did that in the beginning because it was a little faster and cheaper but evidently the cable that does fine for TV can be not quite adequate for broadband and we kept losing ours. Had to switch.

I love the subtle differences US vs. UK when we all sorta assume things are the same. For instance, if a US poster talks about 'my estate' you can assume he/she has a large and very expensive single-family dwelling on a huge piece of land. I gather the UK use of the term is for what we would call a housing development or sub-division or similar.

You got it right! There are still some 'real' estates in the UK - many acres/hectares up to hundreds of square miles - owned by the 'landed gentry', but basically an estate in modern terminology is a housing estate with houses all crammed together. A detatched house may well be only 3 ft from the next - land is very expensive over here.

I guess the floor area of my house which is semi detached is about the same as one of your double/triple garages and the 'back yard' - garden to us, about the same!
