    Hi all!
Every time I click on a link leading off of the site I am currently on, it opens up the page in a new window(a little smaller) and the original page closes! Therefore I cannot use the back button to go back to the original page. This only happens on links that are pointed to a different website, if it is an internal link to a different page on the same site(no matter what site I am on) there is no problem what so ever. If it sounds confusing, I'll be glad to try to explain it better. I have scanned w/ up to date versions of Adaware, Spybot, CW Shredder, Spyware Blaster & Mcaffe VS, all to no avail.I have also scanned w/HJT but I am not comfortable enough with the results to use it effectively on my own. If you would like to see a log, I will gladly post one!
I've posted my problem on a few boards and never got any response, not even "Sorry dude your ******* "....
Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this???
    Maybe yall have some ideas?!!
    Anyone???

Appreciate any and all help &
    Thanks in Advance

flounderman - Welcome to the Board :)

I've not come across that problem before - one thought would be to Repair IE. How that is done depends on which OS you are using, so please come back on this.

Feel free to post an HJT log - if you do so your thread will be moved to Security/Virus/Spyware (standard Board procedure)

Thanks for replying Pete, my OS is Win XP, and I think I'll hold off on an HJT log unless someone thinks it may help. Thanks again and I await your instructions to repair IE.

flounderman --Just checking. Are left clicking on the link, or right clicking|Open in New Window?
Long shot--IE Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab|Browsing section. See if changing the setting "Reuse window for launching shortcuts" helps. In other words change it from whatever if now is to the opposite.

Repairing IE in XP is not as straightforward as in previous versions of Windows. The Method in XP is given in this MS KB article .

First step as per the article is to run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space. You will need your XP installation CD. SFC runs and closes - to see which files, if any, were replaced refer to Event Viewer - not that the file details will necessarily make a lot of sense :)

If this doesn't cure the problem you will have to proceed to the second step.

    IE 6 SP 1 here

If that doesn't work - or if no other solution is forthcoming on the Board, post an HJT log.

    Thanks for the suggestions...
I did the sfc/ scannow with no luck, i guess i will have to try the reinstall when i get home tonight! Is this what i have to do to have ie reinstalled correctly....

When you try to reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
    Setup cannot continue.
To avoid this error message and reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps:
While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

    Thanks again

flounderman--Did you try what I first suggested
    ?
It is simpler than a reinstallation.
As far as that Registry fix, yes that is the one to delete, if you are told you cannot reinstall because you already have that (or a newer) version. Then your PC no longer thinks you have the newer version installed.
But what about System Restore to a date before the problem started? A lot simpler than reinstalling. And how many times have you done a reboot? That often cures many problems.

    IE Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab|Browsing section->Reuse...
was one of the first things I have tried...
    I have restarted numerous times...
no restore points before 9/4, which is after this started...

so I'm at a complete loss,
looks like I'm gonna have to do a reinstall.
What I don't really get is do I just go about installing IE 6.0 straight out like it is not already on my pc ,and not edit the registry unless I get that error....
or do I have to regedit before I reinstall to make it work at all?

    Thanks

flounderman--Before you take IE off your PC, if that is the route you take, be sure you have IE on a CD or a full version of install files already downloaded to your Hard Drive (but not installed).
In all honesty I have no idea what will happen if you just try a reinstall without taking the IE now on your PC off first. If you are dead set on reinstalling, I would think you would have nothing to lose.
    Maybe PeteC can comment.
P.S. Did you ever post your HiJackThis log?

I have done this without any ill effect by right clicking the ie.inf file C:\WINDOWS\inf\ie.inf
    and selecting install.

The first URL I posted in #9 uses the copy of IE on the Win XP CD.

I figured I would go ahead and post a HJT log before I reinstalled.

flounderman - hold off on any fix attempts for right now. You do have a couple of baddies showing up and they could easily be causing your problem.

I'm moving this to security. One note - you should get the latest 1.98.2 version of Hijackthis before you are asked to post the next log file.
