I use a computer with Windows XP and lots of memory. I have both Netscape 7.1 (which I use for cable modem) and Netscape 4.79 (which I use for my old dial-up). I have used both for ages successfully. All of a sudden when I try to open 4.79 it loads 59% of the summary file and then I get the box saying:

Netscape Navigator application file has encountered a problem and needs to close, and asks if I want to send Microsoft an error report.

If I click to see what the error report says, I get:

    Netscape Navigator application file

    Error signature

    AppName: netscape.exe AppVer: 4.79.0.87 ModName: netscape.exe
    ModVer: 4.79.0.87 Offset: 0010e201

Should I download Netscape again? Might it be that my inbox is too large?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Hi rusty2,

Just how large is your Inbox? Try creating an Archive subfolder of the Local Mail Folder. Move most of your messages to the Archive folder. The Inbox is not intended for archiving mail, and if you allow it to grow to a disproportionate size, you risk losing all your mail. If this doesn't help, then try the below workaround.

Netscape caused an invalid page fault in module NETSCAPE.EXE. This happens occasionally when exiting Netscape 4.76-79.

    Try the usual first aid:
    Exit Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\username
Delete the NETSCAPE.HST file, and the CACHE Folder
The file, and folder will be rebuilt.

    Rebuild the Netscape REGISTRY:
    Back up all USERS folders

    With Netscape still closed:
    Navigate to C:\WINDOWS
    Rename NSREG.DAT to NSREG.BAK
    Restart Netscape
The Profile Manager will open and will prompt for a new Profile. Give it the exact name of your current Profile.
Multiple Profiles can be restored the same way.

This is usually the most successful solution when experiencing the netscape.exe error.

    Many thanks, Ramona.

I have at least 20 subfolders, but I have been way behind in moving messages to them. Since I couldn't open Netscape, I couldn't create an archive file from within Netscape. I opened my inbox from Wordpad, and cut and pasted a chunk of it into another file. Then Netscape opened, and I have deleted a number of messages and moved others.

When I empty the trash folder now, it tells me it is unable to compact. Why is that?

    Thanks again,

    rusty2
