I wrote the following to ATI tech support, and they responded with a do not reply email asking me to resubmit the question(s) with some specific items in the subject line. None of the choices they gave me fit my situation, so I'm posting it here in hopes that the good guys at WindowsBBS will come up with a solution:

I'm having some difficulty getting a clean installation of this Video Card on my dual boot computer(XP Home and Vista Ultimate). Under XP home, I lost my internet connection. Under system>device manager, I no longer see a network device. Instead, I see 3 yellow question marks with yellow balls with the black exclamation mark that show up under the general heading of "Other devices "(With its own Question mark).. One is an " Other PCI bridge device ", another is a "PCI Memory Controller" and the third is an "SM Bus Controller ". I had initially downloaded the latest Catalyst suite from your site, and received 5 yellow balls underthe Other Devices heading. I then uninstalled the ATI manager, and used the CD that came with the video card to install Catalyst suite 8.2 from January of this year, whereas the latest is 8.5, if I recall correctly. When I installed the drivers from the CD, two unknown devices disappeared-a high def audio device, and I don't recall the other one. The 3 above metioned ones still remain. The card is behaving correctly, as far as I can tell. It replaced a GeFore 7900GS with 256 megs.
Under Vista, I also downloaded the latest drivers from your site, got some errors, uninstalled the ATI manager, and used the Vista setup from the CD. The installation is fine, but, every time I cold boot the computer into Vista, I get a popup- called "MOM.exe - Fatal Error ". In the box it says " CLR.error: 80004005. The program will now terminate" the only option is to click "ok ".
By the way, I did first uninstall the NVIDIA drivers from add/remove folder in both XP and Vista before I started all of the ATI installations. I did download Microsoft .NET framework 2.0, and install it under XP and Vista as recommended by your install instructions.
Every time I boot into Win XP, I get the Hardware installation Wizard looking to install the above mentioned 3 items. As there is no internet connnection, I can't let the Wizard search for the appropriate drivers, and I have no idea where to get them on my own.
Can you help me get rid of the PCI bridge and memory problems so that I can regain the network adapter(I hope) and get rid of the MOM.exe under Vista?
I am currently connected to the internet under Vista, and the device manager shows nothing unusual. Under XP-no network device and no Internet Connection. Also, under XP, in add/remove programs, I have an entry called Open GL.
I don't recall where that came from, but if you think it is advisable to remove it, I will. I am the one who installed XP after formatting the harddrive more than a year ago, so I must have installed the Open GL program somewhere along the way.
This computer has an ASUS A8Ne mb with an NVIDIA nForce Ultra 4 chipset for the AMD 939 socket processor(an Opteron 170, in this case), it has a Creative Labs XFi-extreme sound card, 2 gigs of ram, and has been running great. I'd appreciate any help you can offer.
    Thanks.
P.S. I wish it didn't say senior member under my screen name. The only thing senior about me is my age.

Those sound like chipset drivers. Go to the Asus website and get the nVidia chipset drivers (under the heading Other in the driver list).

If you have installed SP3 in XP, you may want to get new chipset drivers from nVidia.

If you keep having problems in both Win XP and Vista, there may be a resource conflict. If you have any PCI add-in cards, remove them and see if the drivers will install correctly then.

It sounds like instead of uninstalling the Nvidia display drivers, you may have uninstalled all the Nvidia drivers including the chipset drivers.

Whether or not that occurred, I would follow Mattman's advice and get your board's chipset drivers installed.

Hi Mattman and Chiles4. I happen to have the install CD that came with the motherboard, and found the 3 necessary drivers ok. I'm back online under XP, the 3 yellow balls are gone, and the network adapter is back under the Device Manager.
    Thaks very much.
I wonder if anything is to be gained by going to AsusTek's site, as I seem to recall that the drivers they offer for my board are from 2005. The Cd says it is Cd rev.99.06, and the copyright date is 2005.
I do have SP3 installed, and I wonder id NVidia's latest drivers will show any improvement. I am inclined to just let it be.
Any opinion? The only reason I hesitate is that the chipset is supposed to be nForce 4 Ultra, yet during the POST, it says nForce4. On NVIDIA's site, downoads are available for both, and I wouldn't know which to choose.
    Thanks again for your help.
PS, any opinion about the MOM.exe fatal error?

Good spotting Chiles4, the nVidia uninstallers in Add or Remove Programs are not labelled very well.

skaler2k, how do the graphics drivers seem in Win XP now? If things seem fine now I would not go out of my way to update the chipset drivers. There are several versions of the chipset drivers offered at Asus (use the Global website if you have problems navigating). You could try the latest version.

What I noticed was that there were no Vista chipset drivers offered at Asus. You should get the Vista chipset drivers from nVidia. The specifications say it is an nForce 4 Ultra chipset:
    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=171&l4=0&model=455&modelmenu=2

MOM.exe is part of the ATI Catalyst Control Centre. See what happens after you install the nForce drivers. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the ATI software. Is the graphics card actually built by ATI or another manufacturer using the Radeon chipset? You could try looking for updated Vista drivers/software at the card manufacturer's website.

My strong suggestion is not to use "Look for the drivers on the internet" selection in Device Manager or by using Windows Update. Find them yourself. You have seen what can happen without having the correct chipset drivers installed
