My boyfriend and I just moved to an area where we can no longer use DSL and are having to connect to the internet with AOL dialup (grrr). I use OE to access my mail through another ISP. Most of the time I can't connect to the email server or pull a page in IE (I can pull pages on AOL). I NEVER had this problem until we had to go back to AOL for internet service. My boyfriend was piggybacking it before. Is it possible that the AOL connection, software, etc. could be causing this problem? Does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Switching from AOL to another service is not an option. My boyfriend refuses to live without it.

    Hi,
I noticed you posted your message about a week ago, appreciate your patience...If you don't have the problem already solved by now, then let's try this and see if it's the fix you are looking for:
    (1) Go to Start
    (2) Control Panel
    (3) Internet Options
    (4) Click on Program tab
    (5) At the bottom, put a check mark in the box next to:
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it's the default browser "
    (6) Reboot the computer
    (7) Then check to see if you can now access the email server.

    Keep us posted...

Thanks for the suggestion. So far, I've been having to reboot when I can't get mail or pull pages. Usually I can still pull pages in AOL, but even then sometimes I can't access secure pages.

It's weird. I am trying what you suggested to see if it makes any difference. Thanks.

See if you can do this and let us know how you make out:

Cannot View Secure Web Sites (https:)
If you cannot view or access secure web pages (those beginning with an https:// URL) you may experience an of these symptoms:

You cannot get into hotmail and yahoo email accounts.
    Cannot view secure web sites
    Cannot get into pay pal
    Cannot do a windows update
Cannot get into bank web sites
To resolve this problems, these steps to reset a dll file required to view secure web sites.

    Click Start.
    Click Run.
    Type regsvr32 softpub.dll
Click OK. A pop-up should display with the message Dll Register Server in softpub.dll Succeeded.
    Click OK.

If you try this and still can't access secure sites, make sure you're using the latest version of Internet Explorer or Firefox (see article here). More ideas are in the article here: Inability to Access Secure Sites (https:)

When you get a chance, can you also do this because some web sites do not support the PCT 1.0 AND TSL 1.0 Protocols according to the Microsoft article (Q246725) that I obtained this info from...

    1. Quit Internet Explorer (if it is running).
    2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Scroll down to the Security section.
    5. Clear the Use PCT 1.0 selection.
    6. Clear the Use TLS 1.0 selection.
    7. Click OK.
