    Hi there, I have acquired an annoying Trojan that keeps on coming back. I have Norton System Works 2005 with fully updated Virus definitions, Also AdAware with an up to date definition pack. The Trojan or Trojans reside under the names of 'Downloader' and 'Backdoor.Rustock.B' and everytime I connect to the internet with broadband, Norton's Virus checkers finds them and deletes them. But on the next boot up...there they are back again. Also noted 'winstys32.exe' mentioned on the splash screen from Norton. After noting the screen informing me that Norton has deleted these Trojans, there is also a small window stating 'No Dial Tone Found' . I assume this is an attempt to install a Dialler to a premium rate line but since I have Broadband it does not happen. Have done a full virus check, but since Norton has already deleted them, it does not find anything but something is still there re-installing it when I go online. Norton deleted them but it manifests itself again. I am running XP with SP2. Anyone help as to where I can find the source , for example is it in the Registry, and get rid of it. Ron

    Hello Ron

    Do this: Cleanup first

    ATF-Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
    when run check select all run twice or more until nothing else found
    ===============================================
    CCleaner get the slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx
    Click bottom right Run Cleaner twice
    then in left panel click issues then below Scan for issues run twice or until no more found
    =================================================
    Clean all user profiles at once.

    http://ezpcfix.net/download.aspx?dlo...x-1-0-0-16.exe

    http://ezpcfix.net/download.aspx?dlo...-16/Plugin.inf

    The above need to be downloaded and need no install but need to be put togather in the same folder.

    So download them create a folder I recommend Program Files\EzPcFix and run them from there.

    This seems to be a simple and basic program at first but I advise you not tinker with too many of it's other features unless you know what you are doing. As it has some extremely powerful features but looks so harmless.

    Here are the steps:

    1. Run the program
    2. Click Load Hives
    3. Double click Delete temp files
    4. Select the optional check boxes if you want
    5. If you Checked _Restore /System Volume information\_Restore then you should create a new restore point via System Restore.
    6. I usually close the Hives before exit
    Even better run in Safe Mode

    Update your Adaware
    Update you Virus scanner

    ==============================================
    Download install and run
    http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe

    This is an advanced cleaner that goes after (not everything) but only the worst most prolific and damaging malware and some viri.

    Delete ALL it finds no exceptions, if after cleaning an incident, it advises a reboot, say no during the process, but do so when the program ends before continuing.

    Many finds with this program, then reboot to Safe Mode and run it again. I use this as preclean before SpyBot and AdAware.
    ==============================================

    If you have SpyBot Adaware CWshreeder and SpywareBlaster uninstall them as the following will reinstall them but with full tweaks for indepth scanning.

    Hitman Pro
    http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.ph...9bc670c92f6694

    ==============================================
    then the specific fix for rustb

    http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rustbfix.exe

    Download install and update all the above

    Then boot to Safe mode and run them all in above order.

    Then return to the post and there will be instructions to do a HJT scan.

    Mike

    Hi Ron

    Hopefully you have completeted the above which I call the Shotgun approch.

    Give us a status. Did the above find much especially the Xclean Spybot and Adaware?

    We cleaned all temps and registry and may have gotten rid of some baddies just by doing this. Additionally we reduced the number and size that we now need to access as we proceed.
    ==================================================
    Now let's get a HJT scan.

    Download HijackThis: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

    Double-click hijackthis_sfx.exe, click Unzip

    Close the window
    HijackThis is installed in C:\Program Files\HijackThis, browse there and run it.

    Click “Do a system scan and save a log file”

    When the log file opens then copy and paste into this thread.

    Mike

    trojans

    Hi Mike,

    Just to say I appreciate your reply with all those suggestions. I am going through them all one by one, but bare with me, as we have had a couple of days of storms over here in Scotland and at the moment the priority is a small leak in the roof. But rest assured I will progress through your cleaners and submit a hijack report as soon as I can.

    **just tried the majorgeeks link and it does not seem to work re installing Adaware from that site

    Many thanks

    Ron

    OK Sir

    It will be easier to do than it looks like it would.

    I used the Shotgun approch since it is clear you have 2 obvious problems which in most cases indicate there are others that are not so obvious.

    trojan and virus

    Hi Mike,

    Only managed partial clean. Slight panic when Norton announced on boot up that I had a virus in the Windows folder called........onsnlog.dll ; Norton was saying that access was denied to file. Really slowed the whole pc down too, and the even though I clicked the ok button, it kept coming back. On latest re-boot seems to have gone. But originals are still being found and deleted by Norton.
    That latest link seems to work btw. Will try that tomorrow eneing when I get home.

    Am working away tomorrow, so stay with me if you can and try and see this through. For what it's worth here is Hi Jack log as it stands at the moment.

    Regards and thanks sir from Scotland

    I see that you have at least 4 issues. These could be nasty.

    I stress that you download install and update all of these and run them in Safe Mode. In the same order I gave to download install them from top to bottom.

    There is no internet in safe mode so update them all befor going to SAFE MODE!!!!!!!!

    What did you get run?

    If you are still here, was this in SAFE MODE! You are wasting your time if not safe mode.

    trojans

    Hello Mike,

    It has been a very busy week with work and will continue until thursday for me, so have not had time to really sit down and spend time required to focus on the problem. Sorry if you have been checking back to see if I have replied, but work comes first at the moment and the pc problem has been put to one side.

    I only managed to download and run a couple of the programmes you suggested, but not the whole sequence. What I need to do is wait till Friday when I have some free time, and sit and go through all the options you have given me. The pc will work, but Norton will find and delete the problem trojans, but something is in there to restore them next time on boot up. So until I can get a chance on Friday to really focus on the problem, no real progress will be made.

    A new development has taken place which I thought I should point out. Whatever is in the machine seems to want create a new user with the title...'Adminestrator' that is the spelling it gives up.. I delete it of course. It just needs me to sit down and go through everything stage by stage.
    I just wanted to come on briefly and apologies for not getting back sooner and say thanks again for your time, help and concern. It is appreciated. If I make it Friday unscathed, I will see you at the other side.

    Thanks and best wishes

    Ron

    Trojans

    Hi Mike,

    Well I am back and seem to have wrestled free of the problem. Touch wood. Fingers crossed, but no evidence on the last two boot ups.

    Went through all the processes you suggested..and them some more and cleaned out the system. As requested, ran them all in Safe Mode. Now you did mention in a previous post that I had few nasties in there. I have ran another Hijack this report and that follows at the end.

    Again, thank you for your help and patience in this.

    Regards

    Ron

    Hi Ron

    It looks good!

    You did a great job!

    I logged to your web site good to put a face on you.

    Actually you and I go back a ways.

    I helped you a few years ago when you were logged on as RonSeeth.:)

    Run the cleaners and tools I pointed you to as maintenance every few weeks or at the first sign of a slowdown or suspicious activities.

    Computers are like cars. They need the oil and filter changed antifreeze checked etc...

    Allright good luck my friend,

    Mike
